The Mexican Little League champions out of Mexicali, Baja California are rocking the LLWS.
Their starting pitchers have recorded 12K's, 8K's, and 11K's in their 3 games, winning 3-0 v. Asia Pacific, 3-2 v. Japan, and 2-1 v. Venezuela today. They have stood up to tremendous pressure, with 2 of the games going into extra innings (2 extra v. Japan and 4 extra v. Venezuela), coming through with clutch-but-peculiar double plays in both games. In the bottom of the 7'th inning, bases loaded, with 0 outs, the Mexican pitcher Arellano - the starter - got ponche number 10, and then had a little tapper hit back to him as he charged home plate. Arellano flipped to ball to home for the force-out, and the catcher whipped the ball to first base.
The Venezuelan runner.... SLID into first, giving just enough time for the throw to beat the runner. After video instant replay review... the call was confirmed: the runner was called out. The catcher's decision to throw to first was very risky, because if he does not get the runner at first, then the runner from 2'nd was motoring-in for an easy game-ending score. But, the catcher threw out the runner at first in a bang-bang play. 2 innings later: Ruiz opened the 9'th inning for Mexico with their first home run of the 2011 LL World Series.
By winning today's game, the Mexicans go to the International Championship game on Saturday, v. tomorrow's winner of the Losers Bracket game: Japan v. Venezuela. Both Venezuela and Japan are excellent powerful teams, and it is very difficult to beat a good team twice in a series. The Japanese lost to Mexico due to 2 base running errors on the same play in extra innings, which means Mexico cannot count on Japan or Venezuela beating themselves again.
Good defense, excellent pitching and smart play may take them through this Saturday's 11:00 AM CST International Championship game, and on to the LL World Series Finals on Sunday @ 2:00 CST !- unless there are rain delays...
