FM3

The last time I posted, I was talking about getting the FM3 in Seattle so here's the straight skinny on how all that went and what was required. We have it in hand! I went beautifully! So here's what we absolutely needed: Current Passport, 3 months of Bank Statements, A notorized letter from the bank saying that they would. at my direction, transfer money to a Mexican Bank Account ( $1000 USD for the head of the household and $500 for each dependent was specified in the letter), A notorized letter from the State Highway Patrol that we were not criminals. A word about that: You can go on line and get a background check done but you must have that notorized letter for each person applying, that is all that is acceptable. Pictures are taken and then$134 USD paid per person applying. Now then, I was told to present a document that they issued me within one month of my arrival in Manzanillo and also the Bond will also be removed from the car which we are taking and leaving. We will also be requested Title and Proof of insurance at the border. There you everyone. I would call this an easy experience. Senor Gabrial Diaz in Seattle was extremely decent and very helpful!!

When you get to the INM office in Manzanillo, they will want a Formato Básico which you can fill out online here.
They will also want proof of your local address and several more pictures.

I am very skeptical that you will get your vehicle bond refunded as the consulate guy described.
The consulate people have nothing to do with Aduana who will have your bond money.
I believe you have been given bogus information, and that is not uncommon -- consulates in general have a reputation for giving out bad information.

Best wishes on your new adventure.

This is so true in our area. Our local consulate is ridiculous. They dont answer the phone, different people tell you different requirements, and then when you come back and dont have everything, they smile and ask " who told you that?" . Fun fun.

Congrats on getting your FM3! my consulate told me I couldnt do that in the states.

"Congrats on getting your FM3!"
Actually, he does not have an FM3; he has only completed most of the paperwork.
The FM3 (No Inmigrante) card will be issued by INM in Manzanillo.

Hey Sparks,

I'll be sure to get back to everyone as this process continues to unfold. We leave the end of October so by sometime in November I will update on what actually took place. I basically wanted to leave the extra car in Mexico which has at least a hundred K more miles left in it's life, I'm encouraged that this will work out!

You can leave it ... and if it's older only pay $200. At the border they will probably tell you you get the deposit back when the car leaves Mexico

I assume that if you're not worried about the deposit, the yearly visits to Aduana aren't necessary

Also I would try to complete your visa soon after you arrive because the closer you are to winter/snowbird season .... the busier Manzanillo immigration becomes.

Manz is where I go even tho I live an hour north in Jalisco (Melaque). My renewal is in Feb and very crowded

Could you explain more in detail what, where and how you got the notarized letter. How did you contact the State Patrol? My mother-in-law works for the State Patrol but no one seems to be in the know as to where to get the letter. I don't believe it is standard procedure for them. We are getting ready apply in Seattle if the new rules go into effect before we leave in April.

You do it via their website. When I did it, you run the check yourself, print out the results, fax it to their office asking for the notarized letter back, and they mail it to you.

(Think we've covered this before. It's easy.)

Go to this website and then scroll down to "background check". It's all there.

Good luck!

Dear Frank and Shannon,

It was weird for us also! Montana wouldn't talk about it and Washington couldn't help us enough but the letter from the Highway Patrol attesting to the fact that you are not criminals has to be done in the Capital of the State that you reside. They said after we were there in person that they would have mailed it to us for another $10 each. That would have have saved us some money for sure! The Notorized letter from the Bank was just a letter on Bank stationary stating that your bank would be glad to transfer $1000 for the head of a household and $500 for each dependent. The bank faxed us the copy which the Consulate was good enough to accept. Let me know if this helps!!!

Thanks for the info. It seems the letter request is where the confusion lies. A report they all know about and we have those. But when you ask for a letter it seems to be out of the norm.

You know, I was pretty clear on what this was for so what would have been really helpful would have been someone just saying "after you do the background check then do this and we'll send you a letter that will satisfy the desires of the consulate". Anyway, we got it now and that's what makes these forums so valuable!

Copied from the website I linked above:

Notarized letter $10 each
Please Note: For notarized letters on WATCH transcripts, a credit card authorization form is required. This form can be found on the WATCH website under "Forms" and faxed with your web search transcript to (360) 534-2073.
