Most online forums I have frequented lock threads when the topic becomes heated, has been beaten to death, becomes inappropriate etc. Personal attacks or "ganging up" on a particular member are also reasons to lock a thread. In most forums, it is the moderator(s) way of keeping the peace or keeping conversations civil. I am not a mod here is this forum, I just answer in general.
