Hi Everyone,
If I am living in Mexico on a tourist card, and most likely will drive to Guatemala border to renew it every 6 months, does my American insurance and registration have to be current? Can I get by with just Mexican insurance? Thanks!

You do not need US insurance in Mexico. It's a waste of $ since it doesn't cover you or your can when in MX. Your registration and license tags should be current but no one seems to care if they're not.

But some US States will cancel your plates if you have no insurance - if you don't care and don't plan on going north on a trip - that's fine - we find it easier to have our Arizona agent keep the bare minimum on our vehicles, which keeps the plates valid.
Then we can head north on an annual trip with no problems - and he upgrades the insurance for the period of the trip.

Thank you! I had thought about importing pickup into Guatemala where insurance isn't required and tags are very cheap. Then getting Mexican insurance. But if it isn't enforced great. Is there a workaround that would allow me to leave pickup in Mexico on tourist card if I needed to fly to the States? Guess I could drive to McAllen and fly Southwest from there but if tag has expired might be a problem. Texas requires proof of insurance to renew tag and I won't qualify for FM3.

Should've read your reply first. I'll be on a pretty tight budget, might just get rid of the pickup and bus everywhere. Don't plan to drive it much anyways.
