Update on bringing pet food into Mexico at Laredo

Can't Post | Private Reply
In June I reported that at Bridge #2 in Laredo the customs agents wanted to confiscate my bags of pet food, saying that as a "tourist" I was only permitted to bring in one bag of pet food in spite of the fact that I had paid the duty on the 15 small and large bags in my car.
I tried Bridge #1 this time, and there was no problem at all. The agents looked in all my doors, checked the pet rabies certificates and seemed to want only the expedite my leaving. In fact they did not ask me to pay any tax! There was no line of pisanos to wait behind either, and the Migrcion office was right there with no line inside to take my visa receipt. I saved two hours going to Bridge #1 and all the stress.

You had a problem in June because of the individual customs official you happened to draw, not the bridge you chose. The rules and procedures are the same at the two downtown bridges.

Altahabana,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, apparently this is the case. I won't be going back to #2 for awhile. Also, a local veterinarian told me that big importers of pet food like Science Diet have to wait months to get a permit to bring in food which is what the agent at #2 told me I needed to do.
So far so good!

If Bridge I works better for you from a convenience standpoint that's the bridge you should use. I was just pointing out that the customs procedures at Bridge I are not more relaxed than they are at Bridge II. In fact customs personnel are rotated between the two bridges on a periodic basis.

Altahabana, Thanks for this very important tip..about the rotation because that particular agent will recognize me as I recognize him. It was the inspector that caused me the trouble actually, not the head agent. I appreciate the heads up. All info is helpful.
