Hotel in Mexico

My mexican tapatia wife has asked me to take her to Mexico to visit the Basilica de Guadalupe so she can give thanks for her survival of her kidney stones being removed from both kidneys. The first being a major operation by IMSS which hospitalized her for a week and the second payed for by my credit card at Hospital Angeles del Carmem here in Guadalajara. IMSS had the machine to break up the stones so they would pass, but it had been broken for some time and it was urgent that the stones be removed before kidney loss resulted. She now has a nice 8-10 inch scar on her side. With a credit card I was able to find a excellent hospital and surgon with a machine that worked. Now to the point of my post. I would like to find a reasonable hotel with a good restaurant ($100US/night is OK) that put us on a more or less easy journey to the basilica. We will be arriving by plane from Guadalajara and staying two nights in Mexico before leaving on a month trip to the US. I could be interested in a not too expensive guide if one is known.

Last time I went with some friends , we stayed at Hotel Cathedral in the center and took a bus right on the Zocalo direct to the Basilica.

There's no need to pay so much for a nice hotel room in Mexico City, unless spending excess money pleases you. You can do very well for $800 pesos or much less. There's a lot of information on hotels in Mexico City on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree Mexico Branch forum.

Examples, Hotel Stanza, Colonia Roma Norte. $720 and up.http://www.stanzahotel.com/tarifas.php

Hotel Milán, same area. $480 and up.

Cheaper yet, but very acceptable: Hotel Embassy (same area). $300 and up.

Closer to Centro, Hotel Pal Arcos de Belén at Balderas. $450 and up.
This is a 10 minute walk to the fabulous foodie market, Mercado San Juan.

Breakfast can be had at many o.k. or better cafes and restaurants near various hotels. For example, we enjoyed eating at the tiny, "neighborhood place feel" La Piccolina, on Calle Luis Moya at Marqués Sterling a few blocks northeast of Hotel Pal. It's across from the Hotel San Diego, also very inexpensive, but I can't comment on it as we've never stayed there.

I wish to thank everybody who replied to my request. You were all very helpful. After all your trouble I was informed by my son-in-law that he has family living in Mexico and we will be staying with them and they will pick us up from and deliver us to the airport, take us to the basilica and give us a bed. Thanks again.
