HACIENDA AJIJIC Steak House Review

Last Thursday night July 21, 8 of us from our Dinner group ate at Hacienda Ajijic Steak House. The meat dishes are $ 90. pesos on Thursday. On Wednesday Seafood dishes are $ 90. pesos. They brought out the chips and 3 spreads along with fresh salsa. Then they took our drink orders. We had the opportunity to listen to a very talented 10 year old boy on the keyboard.

We all ordered different dishes. Two ordered Shrimp Diablo mild. One ordered Salmon. One ordered Fried Chicken and said it was very moist. Two people split a Chicken and Shrimp Mocajete which they liked. One ordered a Vacio steak and said it was cooked perfect, his very rare and liked it very much. He is the fussiest steak eater I have ever met. I ordered a Filet medium rare and it was done perfectly. It was very juicy and tender comparable to Laurent who has an excellent Filet.

Everyone liked their meals very much. We highly recommend Hacienda Ajijic.

The service was excellent too.

How was the wine list and prices? The last time we went there, they had just a few choices and all were over 200 pesos.

At a restaurant can one really expect anything drinkable for less than 200 pesos?

Bennie, We are not wine snobs or connisseurs, or rich, like you, I guess. We are quite happy to see LA Cetti, XA, Las Moras, Concha y Toro or several other Chilean, Mexican or Argentinean wines in a restaurant at 150-190 pesos/bottle.

And we can do that in most restaurants here. I asked about Hacienda specifically because that was not possible. Their wine prices (at that time) were marked up 3 or 4 times retail. Which isn't ok with us.

John, thanks for the courteous response to my query. Hopefully, someone else can provide details?

Pita, just because I don't like cheap wine does not make me rich or a snob. If I can't afford a bottle that I enjoy then I simply don't partake. Same goes for any spirits. I won't drink cheap tequila either, Would rather do without. I would rather have an occasional bottle of nice wine than frequent bottles of not nice wine.

Like I said, Bennie - we are not fussy. We are not drinking the stuff in boxes or jugs, but a lower end wine at a reasonable price goes well with our dinner. But on special occasions, we will spring for the good stuff.

I think the problem with some restaurants is that they get greedy on the markup. Whether it's good or dubious wine, there are limits to most peoples' gouging acceptance. Restaurants who mark up past that level usually hurt their reputation with the public. Word does get around......like right here.

I would say a reasonable markup on wine (in Lakeside) is 2X to 3X. All other things being equal, we will visit a restaurant with a lower markup more frequently. Which Absolutely IS one of the reasons we do like Tango. (and why I inquired about the wine prices at Hacienda Ajijic.)

Two or three time mark up is the normal markup except for wine by the glass where restaurants need to recoup their cost after the second glass. It is why you are better off ordering a bottle if you are going to drink more than 2 glasses of wine from the same wine.
I am not speaking of the house wine but of various wines that are offered by the glass. There is a lot of loss in the wine by the glass program if you the restaurant follow that formula, This of course the wine is thrown out once the wine is off which does not always happen.
