so uhm.. 'FM3' renewal

Can't Post | Private Reply
Can someone explain to me the process of renewing the 'FM3'? I gather from reading the forums the FM3 no longer exists but is the new way harder / easier? I want to become a citizen sooner than later as well, so what is the best thing for me to do? I've only had the FM3 for one year.. thanks!

FM3 is now No Inmigrante. FM2 is now Inmigrante.
The path to citizenship is through the Inmigrante.
You'll find all the information you need by reading here.

Is the application process the same? Since we've never even been through a renewal I was kinda wondering what the paperwork is going to be like.

Hmm, so there is really no benefit to becoming a citizen other than having not having to renew each year and the costs associated with that.. and of course being able to work would be nice..

Is the cost of plating your car expensive? I heard the plate was expensive and the insurance is a whole other matter.

No, because if I wanted to click a million links on a website I wouldn't have asked here.
But forget that I asked to begin with.

Arenkai, IMHO you are making a big mistake by failing to read Rolly's website. You might actually learn both what you want to know as well as a lot of other things you NEED to know.

Rolly's work has undoubtedly helped more people get through the maze of Mexico's bureaucracies than anyone else on this website.

I may be. But unfortunately, loading one page is a lot easier for me.
I live out in the boonies and use Telcel tethered to my iPhone. A page that is cached loads a lot better than link after link.

There was a period in the early days on this forum when members were expected to do some research on their own and use the excellent search function provided. We are seeing the effects of the "instant gratification generation" who ask their questions without research. After all, their question is about themselves and no one else could possibly have had the same experience.

The logic here is great - everyone else should do the work because of the limitations of the poster's Telcel connection tethered to an iPhone!

As usual, your post went far to clear up any questions by the OP. I doubt anyone has yet posted on a renewal since the law was recently changed.

The links provided by Rolly go into what may be the best available info but the OP refused to go there to read up.

I doubt anyone has yet posted on a renewal since the law was recently changed.
Indeed, no one has done anything under the new law (24 May 2011) because it has not been activated.
New INM rules are still being written. November is the deadline.
No word yet on when the new rules will be published.
Meanwhile, the existing rules remain in place.

I didn't refuse to do anything. I have been dealing with a piss poor internet connection, which I am sorry isn't a legit reason to want a simple reply ... which Rolly's latest post answered. That is all I wanted. What I had read didn't clearly elicit to me the fact that nothing has really changed except for the names. To me, all the talk about these big changes made me think I was missing something, so I asked. Which apparently broke a cardinal rule, which is interesting since that is what I thought forums were for.

Your post generalizing me, Rolly, is 100% wrong. #1, the original post stated I'd done some reading. #2, I am the opposite. If someone asked a question that I could answer I'd either answer it or copy and paste the answer (if the answer was easily accessible). Obviously because I asked I understood others have been through this situation. I choose to be helpful rather then assuming. I could easily make a comment out the elderly of this generation but since I'm not a fan of lumping anyone into a group I never do such a thing.

You don't have to be a citizen to be able to work. I have what used to be called an FM3 that allows me to work as a free-lance English teacher.

How does that work for you? I am currently in the process of getting my TEFL but becoming a bit discouraged with all the people offering English out there.

I am semi-retired, so I only have a few private students I work with in my apartment. Living in Mexico City makes it fairly easy to find students, either through recommendations or free ads I have placed on the internet. If you live in a small town, it will be more difficult, but not impossible.

I suggest posting for more information at websites that focus on TEFL. Send me a PM and I'll be happy to send you the links of the two I participate in.

Oh wow!! What's it like living there? I'd love to go see it sometime but my parents are not interested so I'd hav e to find someone willing to go with me as going alone would be the death of my sanity. Simply flying over it once made me want to go there so bad.

I teach 2 adults and 2 children in my home from the village. I had hoped to have more but it seems the kids weren't thrilled at having to pay a measly 20 pesos and lost all but these 4. Now it's summer and they're going on vacation and I'm bored out of my tree. Been looking online for online type deals since I'm not interested in driving into Mazatlan if I can't get more than 20 pesos for an hour. My gas would cost me that much.

Mexico City is an exciting place to visit and a good place to live, if you enjoy the cultural (and other) pleasures a huge city can offer. If you find a traveling companion and come for a visit, let me now and I'd be happy to meet you and show you around.

Charging 20 pesos for an English class is like giving it for free. It sounds like the people in your village are either very short of cash or have little interest in learning English. Perhaps you should think about moving to a place with more possibilities for finding work.

I know what I charge is peanuts ... I more of wanted to start as a volunteer to get a feel for things ect. The charge was implemented to weed out those who weren't really interested in learning. I managed to do that better than I had hoped.

Moving to another place isn't an option right now as I'm a dependent and apparently am unable to fully take care of myself. I'm struggling right now having been alone for the last week while my parents have made a trip home. As much as I'd love to be on my own from time to time reality always kicks me in the face.

It was a good idea to charge something for your classes; people value things more it they have to pay for them, even if the amount is rather small, as it is in your case. I weed out people who aren't really interested in improving their English by charging a fair fee and making them come to my place for classes. This has worked out pretty well for me too.

I'm sorry to hear about your difficult situation. I hope that things will get better for you in the future :-) .

I wonder if charging more for the students do come would prevent the problems I am having with them.. meaning they are always 15 minutes late (of course now I just expect them at 15 past the hour) but it's a day to day guess on whether or not they're even going to come. Sometimes I get a text and sometimes I don't. Sometimes they say see you tomorrow and don't show. It's really frustrating but as a friend said, it's the culture and hard to change. So I sit in my house and wait until about half past and give up.. but even then they have shown up past that, with no apologies.
