coming to Mexico

Called the airport today to book a flight. In the course of conversation they said check with Mexico, some countries require a round trip ticket as proof your leaving the country.
I called the airport in Cancun to find out if I need a round trip ticket since I do not have my fm3 yet. ( will be obtaining it when I get there) Not sure the guy understood what I was talking about.
Can anyone please tell me since I do not have my fm3 yet do I need a round trip ticket? Hate to waste the extra money when I am not returning to the states

Thanks
Tony

When I moved back to Mexico in 2007, I came in on a one-way ticket, arriving at Benito Juárez airport in Mexico City.

I'm hardly an expert here, but I understand that with the new imigration laws just signed, that you can't get an a "residente temporal" (old FM3) while in Mexico. I didn't think they were inforcing any of the new laws yet, but maybe some offices are. So it's posible that you need a return ticket now. How many airlines did you check with?

The new law will not be applied until the rules are finished -- probably in November.
For now, the existing rules continue. An FM3 can still be issued in México.

You can be 99.999% sure (by my estimate) that Mexican officials won't require it but some airlines don't recognize that and insist on you having proof of leaving the country before you board. So essentially it is up to the airline.

My understanding of the new system is that everyone gets the same form upon entering the country, but you fill it out differently depending on whether you plan to stay for less than 180 days (tourist status) or make your application to convert it to [the status formerly known as] FM3. If this is accurate, then there should be no justification whatsoever to refusing passage to someone with a one-way ticket.

I have had friends fly in for years, using different airlines, and always buy one way to Mexico and decide months later when when they will fly back...then buying another one way ticket. Then I have had other people I know buy a cheap round trip to Cancun and never planning to use the return flight.

If RT is required, one could buy a refundable full fare return ticket then cancel it after getting there.

Tony,
Not sure what you mean by "called the airport". Tickets are purchased from airlines or online agencies (usually). airports don't sell tickets. Don't know how to "check with mexico" either, for that matter, is extremely vague.
Anyway, this is real suspicious what you heard. I do NOT know official rules and law but I have entered Mexico MANY times and no one has ever asked to see my ticket (so they had NO idea whether I had one-way or round trip).

It now looks like Spirit air was just trying to rip me off. The agent was the one that told me I needed round trip. He said it is not their rules but TSA I called TSA it was a lie.

Spirit in my opinion is garbage. They charge for each bag plus carry ons. Jet Blue allows each person one bag and $35 for the second. carry on free. Spirit charges if you get pre arranged seating another words if you want to sit with your traveling companion and you pick seats before the flight, they charge you.
Jet Blue does not. And most of all Spirit lies to get you to book round trips Jet Blue does not.
I would walk to Mexico before I flew that airline.
