On varying maps and in writings, it is referred to as Laguna de Chapala - I've never understood the difference. In my mind a laguna would be smaller - but my mind is often wrong.

A laguna is an open body of water, like a lagoon, that has open access to the ocean, gulf etc.. A Lago is a lake, a closed body of water.
I am sure someone will correct me on the details, as they usually do.

There's a couple of mostly dry lakes around here called Laguna San Marcos and Laguna Sayula so I think the word is used freely, in this area at least.

The area where I live is called La Laguna because eons ago it was a lake.
This is also the home of La-La dairy products which takes its name from La Laguna.

One needs to take into consideration, when using Wikipedia, but it is made up of posts from all and sundry and is not 100% reliable.

I've never been to Chapla, but lagunanet.net.mx is my ISP :)

ONLY kidding. :) I enjoyed both the question and the answers.
