my wife is a canadian citizen but holds permanent residency in US(green card). What kind of documents will she need to apply for FM3? Is it different than a US citizen?

She is a Canadian, so she will need her Canadian passport.
The fact that she has a USA green card has nothing to do with her FM3 application and need not be mentioned..

Hi Rolly,

In Tamaulipas I was required to show both my Canadian Passport as well as my "Green Card", as the question was raised as to why I had an American address on my Canadian passport. So it can indeed be asked for, but after they saw it, no copy was made or kept by the immigration officials in Tamaulipas. I had to show this twice by the way. We all know that even though we are dealing with a Mexican federal Law, it seems as though each state in Mexico has their own "in house" rules. I have found the Queretaro Offices to be much more professional and polite than they were in Tamaulipas. Same goes for the photos, it sems as though each office has their own rules for the number of photos one must have.

What about the birth certificate. Canada does not do apostille.

Take it to the Mexican consulate serving your area, and they take care of your needs. It's easy.

I sent my Birth Certificate to a Mexican Man who is a Apostile in New York City and he had the certificate Apostiled. It was very expensive at $450 US Dollars. Quite a chunk of change but I had it back in less than 5 days. He was on a list provided to me by the immigration lawyer in Tamaulipas. That list was supposedly provided to the lawyer by the immigration service in Tampico. It was the only way I could get a recognized Apostile. I do have his name if you want it to explore that for yourself.

My partner just got two documents apostilled, one in New York and the other in Florida. Our lawyer suggested that she used a service similar to the one that Robt65 used; the cost for the apostilles of the two documents using that service would have been $1000USD.

Instead, my partner did it herself. The requests were simple, a friend heading for the States took them with him to mail from his destination, and within just a few days both of the now-apostilled documents were in my partner's USA mailbox in Florida. That mailbox service FedEx-ed them to her at our Mexico City address within a couple of days.

The total cost was under $100USD.

YMMV of course.

Hi Esperanza,

I really believe these persons who perform the apostils set their own fees. I know that mine was very expensive and I believe it is because they know you need them in a hurry. If your partner Esperanza had a need for a Canadian Birth Certificate to be Apostiled for that price, I would sure go that route. Was it a Canadian document that required the apostile? I know it takes a little more work for a Canadian document but surely not that much, but they had me over a barrel and I believe they knew it. I also mailed my own from my office in the USA by FedEx and it was back to me within five days by FedEx. One still has to use a "listed" Apostile; at least that is how it needed to be in Tamaulipas. For whatever reason it seems as though the Governments left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

Regards,

You might look into this site: http://www.apostilla.com/

I am now looking at my Apostiled birth certificate plus the reciept, and it was $400 not the $450 as I earlier quoted. It was also (in some manner known only to the Apostil done through the "U.S. Department of Sate for Authentication". My Apostillle was signed by the "Special Deputy Secretary of State, State of New York and bears the stamp & a big gold seal of the "County of Kings, at New York. It was signed by James Bizzarri, Special Deputy Secretaryu of State. Can't figure how that was done but that is word for word of where and how my Canadian Birth Certificate was Apostiled. the address of the Apostile is 60 East 42nd Street, Suite 3502, New York, NY 10165, Phone number is (646) 536 - 2742 and Fax is (646) 365 - 3002.

Hope that helps a little,

Regards
