Carlos Slim takes some heat from Mexican telecom/TV regulators

Can't Post | Private Reply
Reuters has a special report on Carlos Slim and his latest woes with Mexican regulators who are scrutinizing the relationship between Telmex and Dish Mexico, a satellite TV provider:

Special report: New Mexican TV probe hits embattled Slim

Maybe this investigation will ultimately lead to lower prices for fixed-line Internet service from Telmex?

(I know, I know. Dream on, baby! Dream on...)

I have been hoping that the Mexican government would loosen up some and grant Telmex permission to enter the TV market. I believe that Telmex would have offered a U-verse type of Internet/TV/Phone option in at least the larger cities. As it is, the best to hope for is the installation of more fiber and better Internet connections from Telmex.

Here is a link to a background article from Bloomberg.

Very interesting post! I was unaware of the extent of Slim's dominance of the Mexican economy until reading these statements from the article. It says that Slim's businesses "...account for more than one-third of the capitalization of the Mexican stock market...." and also that the revenue from his companies "...are worth more than 8 percent of Mexican gross domestic product." That's huge--though I knew he was a very big deal in the Mexican economy, I never imagined how much!

I regard the Bloomberg article as very good news indeed. One thing about Sr Slim--he does invest in his businesses, especially in building infrastructure. I think constructing a fiber optic network will be very important for Mexico, and will do a lot to move the country's technology base forward. It will also be very good for his companies, and I have no doubt he'll find many ways to capitalize on that network in the future.
