I often use GDL in writing as it's much easier to type. Same with PV, although I never use either of these in conversation. My friend (Mexican) who lives in GDL uses that abbreviation in writing as well, we normally communicate by text messages.

Being a Tapatío, I'll share my point of view regarding the issue:

We do not use Guad instead of Guadalajara. Personally, I do not like it.

Do not use the term "Guanatos", unless you want to sound like a lowlife mexican. It was a slang term for Guadalajara in the 70's popular among marihuanos.

But, hey, this is a free country.

I saw an extreme example of disrespect on another forum when the poster didn't even bother to put either pv or guad in CAPS.

Axixic, your translation is not good, it changes the meaning of "two hundred years ago" for "for over two hundred years".

"Dogos" is the way hotdogs are called at a place called "Dogos Meños", it does not translates to bulldog. Hotdogs are called...hotdogs.

Tapatiotl was the root word for Tapatío, not "Tapatietl".

Yeah I know nothing about the city in spite of having raised 3 kids in the city. And my wife, who went to the UdG in the 70s, (prepa y universidad), says thank you for the education.

Abbreviations for City Names is very common.

As for Guadalajara, GDL seems to be the most popular abbreviation. JA is the new abbreviation for Jalisco, the old one was Jal.

GDL is a good abbreviation for a long name that is often spelled incorrectly.

GDL as an abbreviation can have several meaning depending on what you are talking about of the groups you hang out with.

The spelling checker returns.......
