This definitely looks interesting! I have never used Netflix and so I don't know how much a subscription to the unlimited usage discussed in this article costs in the States. Presumably, it would be priced similarly in Mexico. Another question would be, what are the bandwidth requirements?

Edit: I see in the original article that it is only $7.99 per month in the USA and Canada.

Tomas, my wife and I used Netflix for many years in the US, and we have missed it here in Mexico. This is very good news indeed. As for bandwidth, I have used it with a 2 gigabit download speed and it has worked fine. They do a very nice job of adjusting the stream and their buffers to your connection speed.

Hello Jim,

That sounds encouraging. I assume you mean 2 Megabits per second download speed? Which is about 250 KiloBytes per second.

Good to hear that they use a sophisticated codec scheme to adjust for various bandwidths and latencies.

Ah, the poor brain. Yes, megabits!

We have a subscription to the streaming service which we started when we discovered we could use software like Hotspot Shield or other VPN's to spoof our IP address. Unfortunately, it was often problematic (sometimes it worked and sometimes we got a dreaded message from Netflix that movies weren't available in our location) and we had pretty much decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Recently, two different VPN software programs failed to connect. This should change all that.

Here is the Netflix link to sign up for notification direct from Netflix when service is available in Mexico. Its in Spanish but very easy to understand. The number of requests received by Netflix will help them to gauge the interest here for service.

When I click the link I get a page, all in English, to sign up for a 30 day free trial.

That's odd. When I clicked on the link, I got a page in Spanish inviting me to sign up to be notified when Netflix will be available in Mexico. I hope it really happens!

Yes, the program reads IP addresses and presents the corresponding page.

I had the same experience that La Isla did, with a page in Spanish to request notification when Netflix is available in Mexico. I use the Google Chrome OS though, and it has a translation bar on it to translate the page in to English. I don't need to use it, but it is easier for me, so I translated it.

They asked for my name, and email address and said I would receive an email when their service is available here. Oddly enough, when I clicked to register my request, the page reverted to Spanish. Oh well, it is not too important to me, I do have a package of a very few English language programs with Cablemas, my cable TV provider here in Cuernavaca, not great, and a little boring, but in English. Hopefully they will notify me when it is available here and I will try it. The ISP shielding programs never have worked for me, They always know where I am, and tell me that their service is not available for the country I am in.

Sorry to be a downer, but I don't see the bandwidth here through Telmex to be adequate. I have 2mb and it's rarely 1.3 and even at that many or most uTube etc. video clips aren't buffered correctly. So, if they actually offer it here the primary thing it will do is jam up the existing bandwidth for the rest of us not using it.

I do a fair amount of upload for the weather station etc. and of course that side of the service is something beyond pathetic, again to imagine this being a swipe of the magic wand is unlikely. Additionally Carlos is trying to push through TV and he's being rebuffed on that issue, so why would he want to create an environment someone else can profit from?

Your problem is probably with where you live, your Internet access usually goes through Guadalajara. I realize that folks living in the Gringo Ghettos seldom have any choice for Internet access other than Telmex. I use the slowest speeds offered by Cablemas for Internet access here., at a lower cost than Telmex charges per month. My upload speed is rated at 2 GB, and my download speed at 512 MB. They always test at very close or slightly over those speeds.

I never have any problems with buffering, and my Skype and Voyage phones work very well with no problems.

My late wife and her brothers spent many of their summer school vacations with her aunt and uncle in Ajijic. I have visited there many times, probably for longer periods of time than many ex-pats have lived there. For a variety of reasons, I rejected it as a place to retire, a better climate, shopping, nicer people, and generally lower prices here in Cuernavaca, Morelos are just some of the reasons, to say nothing of fewer English speaking ex-pats. It is a nice area, but it is not for me. You almost must speak at least some Spanish to live where I do though.

No, my problem is a lot of people who still insist on cramming video, movies, etc down the pipe we have and this will only exacerbate the problem.

I clicked the link, which came up in Spanish.

My concern is whether we will have choices of language when the service is available or whether it will automatically default to Spanish based on our address.

When we rent videos, the opening screen usually gives us choices, including possible subtitles. I wonder if this will be the same in streaming from Netflix.

If this is any help - we sometimes stream movies directly to our TV here NOB. The choice for streaming are exactly the same as if one was to rent a DVD.

Neil, either you have a Netflix service that I can't get or you have misstated....

Only a portion of the the Netflix 'holdings' are available for streaming. In fact it is a fairly significant reduction. Netflix says, "With DVDs by mail, you'll get an even broader selection of movies & TV episodes". For example I just got "The Company Men" (Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones) on DVD but it was not available for streaming. As I understand it, this is not a Netflix 'problem'.... it's just that they can't make (some/most) newer movies available for streaming as soon as they can on DVD.

Now one can solve that 'problem' by paying just $2 more a month ($9.99 total) and get both streaming AND mail-out DVDs. If you want Blu-ray DVDs also, add another $2/mo.

Having said that, Netflix says that their streaming service now has more customers than their mail-out DVD service.

It's Sunday afternoon about 4:30 and I'm so excited, I just checked my router speed to find 2048/384 (and yes, I pay for 2megs) and ran a speed test and I'm .43 down and .17 up - wow, I may sign up for dialup any day now? We have miles to go here before anyone should be thinking about a serious Netflix or any other video download and a bit of consideration for all of us who share this pipe would also be appreciated.

So this afternoon, after thinking about this for some time, I went out and bought a new Blu-Ray DVD player with Netflix (and other things) built in. I figure $7.99 for streaming plus $2 to get the disks from Netflix in the mail is a good deal.

When I was installing my new DVD I went to Netflix to sign up for my 1-month free trial but it kept telling me that the price was either $7.99 or $15.98. Something is wrong. This morning it said $9.99!

I Google'd 'Netflix streaming' and the first thing that came up was a link to a news account that was only 1-hour old. "Netflix has raised their pricing today by 60%. Customers are outraged. Everyone will bolt". etc etc

Sometimes my timing is not so good. Today was one of those 'sometimes'..... I'm just saying.

Netflix launched service to Brazil today. According to an AP update, Mexico and other Latin and South American countries will be launched soon. The price announced for Brazil was about $9/month

Mexico Launches on Monday September 12 at 99 Pesos!!.

Although I signed up with Netflix for Mexico updates I have not received anything yet!
