Life Planning in Jalisco (or elsewhere in Mexico)...update

Life Planning in Jalisco is an unusual blog because it moves across borders researching and exploring what foreigners may want to get into place as 'we' age in dealing with the legal and medical maze found south of the border.

The blog covers discussions about durable powers of attorney in Jalisco (and in Mexico), health care directives/living wills, what's available from the Mexican federal government, ideas of who you call in an emergency, how they know what meds you might be on, who takes care of you when you can't, who takes care of the dog.....

The link is www.lifeplanninginjalisco.wordpress.com
Any questions....??? You a welcome to post a note on the website or directly to the author!

The main publication is Life Planning in Jalisco, which is available electronically or in hard copy at La Bella Vida in Ajijic or at the Law offices of Azucena Bateman, also in Ajijic. Lots of other information is available in a wide-variety of posts on-line.

For those located in the Lake Chapala area, you will find recent articles in Judy King's on-line magazine (June) and in the Lake Chapala Review (June).

For those of you who are really working at getting this stuff in place, or wanting to get it in place, the easiest, least expensive point to start with is the Mexican Federal Legislation that let's you designate someone to make medical decisions for you when you cannot and allows you to set out 'health care directives' (living will). More information is on the site. It's possible to do it yourself, but also available is Lic. Azucena Bateman, in Ajijic, who has agreed to provide this service for a limited fee as a community service!

Life is as Life happens.....

Using durable powers of attorney here in Mexico are a possibility....even in the state of Jalisco where there is 'no' durable power of attorney available.

How is that possible?
Durable powers of attorney for medical decisions, for example, from the US can be used in the State of Jalisco, with an apostille and legally translated into Spanish.

And, durable powers of attorney for medical decisions, for example, from other Mexican states can be used in the State of Jalisco.

As well as conducting the research for this information, I sent the information to Puerta de Hierro Hospital in Guadalajara for review by their legal counsel.

The law firm of Acosta & Associates in Guadalajara confirmed that the documents are legally recognized in the State of Jalisco. For use at Puerta de Hierro, they will want to see the signed documents to be verified.

More information can be found at www.lifeplanninginjalisco.wordpress.com.
Hard copies of the publication are available in the Lake Chapala area of Jalisco.

Questions?

This is an update to the previous post.
As of July 30, 2011, a durable power of attorney exists in Jalisco, along with some limited health care directives for curative care, not palliative care as provided in the federal legislation. The durable power of attorney and limited health care directives pertain specifically to the 'guardianship' process.

For some information on the new legislation, go to the website www.lifeplanninginjalisco.wordpress.com

Look at posts for: articles, the link for the Guadalajara Reporter, and durable powers of attorney.
