Crossing into Mexico from states other than Texas

Can't Post | Private Reply
It comes to mind that the border crossings being spoken of for the most part are in Texas. Time and again we are reminded that the cartel activity is fairly certain to be in those areas where the crossings are found. But what is the state of affairs in states west? Has anyone any thoughts regarding crossings in New Mexico or Arizona? Perhaps the advice is the same, but I don't seem to find as much discussion about crossing in these states. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I will only speak to one crossing in the areas that you defined - Santa Teresa, NM - San Jeronimo, Chihuahua. we have used this crossing repeatedly for going on 6 years for one or more trips to Mexico. In all those years, we have never experienced one negative thing along this route! However, since I watch the local news from along this route very carefully, we have made the decision that for the very first time we will suck it up and fly to Guadalajara rather than driving down this August. That is our decision and by no means do I mean to imply that everyone should make the same decision!

We have absolutely no experience traveling the I15 route from Nogales and so I will not comment on that option.

Please feel free to send me a PM if you would like more details on just why we made our choice.

Folks from our area (Lake Chapala) use the Hwy 15 route between Guadalajara and Nogales, AZ often and report no problems.

brokenkettle, I see that you have been on Mexconnect since 2002 so if you have been 'actively reading posts' you know that border crossings have been discussed and cussed. There are as many opinions of where to cross as there are crossing. Back in the good ole days we only concerned ourselves with such trivia as 'what motels took pets' and 'how long did it take to clear customs' and that was done ad nauseum. That was then and this is now 'tho I guess.

But it is my opinion that crossing at states other than (eastern) Texas is probably no less or no more perilous with respect to the current cartel situation. The facts just don't substantiate (again my view) that one crossing is much better or worse than any other all across the border. Some are less of a hastle than others but this has nothing to do with border violence.

You name a crossing and I can name 'violent situations' that have occurred within 200 miles of said crossing.... and not isolated to one occurrence either. But at the end of the day there is no data that suggests that a person on a random trip into or out of Mexico is going to be involved in one of those situations no matter where they cross. Having said that, I personally do not plan on any crossings through the state of Tamaulipas (except maybe Laredo) at this point. But I also wouldn't drive from, say, Houston/Dallas to western Texas or Arizona to cross if my final destination were anywhere other than the Pacific coast region!

All of us have our own ideas and 'limits' as to this subject. I personally will not discontinue driving into Mexico until and unless my understanding of doing that tells me something has changed for the worse.

YMMV
