Cost of Internet? Is it really expensive?

I keep reading that good internet - maybe ADSL? - is very expensive in Mexico.

Is it? How much are people paying for reliable ADSL in different locations? Is one place more expensive than another?

I need internet to keep in touch with a business I own - it is not an option - I need good reliable service. Possible? Or pipe dream?

The most common internet service is DSL from the telephone company (Telmex) which covers the whole country.
Some cable systems offer a broadband service.
In general the speed is slower and the cost is higher than most places in the USA.

The internet service is unlimited for a flat monthly rate. The other stuff there is their telephone service which is bundled with the internet. The price differences you see are the "free" long distance minutes bundled with the internet.

The basic internet speed is 2 meg down and 0.3 up. Not very fast. There are faster speeds available at much higher costs that are not shown on the website -- used to be there, but not now.

You get a wireless modem that also has four wired ports. My service is very reliable. They have English-speaking trouble operators who can help you by phone if you have problems. Their maintenance people are well trained and easy to deal with once they get to your house -- getting a service call scheduled is not always quick.

So . . . about $400 pesos per month for unlimited access? That's cheaper than where I am now.

Mildly slow is fine. I don't do any gaming or graphics intensive stuff.

Infinitum, formerly the US Prodigy, is the broaband service of TELMEX.
You will need an evaluation from the town and neighborhood you plan to be in to get a fair appraisal of its quality. Service ranges from great and superfast to slow, intermittent and interrupted. In my case I experience all conditions several times a day. Troubleshooting is exellent 24 hrs a day, service calls are variable.
Unlimited internet is bundled wih phone service and it is not clear exactly what Infinitum costs. The least expensive package is 599 pesos (to 1mb download speed), the best (non business up to 5mb speed) is 999 and includes free local and US calls. Down and upload speeds are imaginary and not what Telmex claims.
For standard business use, the service is satisfactory. For advanced use, you should look at a dedicated line (T1).

Depending on location there are other service providers.

Thank you! So the top end would be about or less than US$100 a month. Not great, but not horrible. I don't do heavy usage but do need reliable access.

I use the air card from Telcel, you can use it anywhere in the country where there is a cell signal, no contract, cost about 600 pesos for the air card and 1 month service, then 500 pesos per month unlimited usage...hope this helps......

I get cable and internet service from Megacable at 699 pesos a month. This is with their Super Digital cable service and internet at 5Mbps. Never had serious problems with outages nor slow speeds.

In Mexico City, I get 5.08 down and 0.65 up. 389 pesos monthly includes our land line rental plus 100 minutes long distance time to the USA and/or Canada AND unlimited long distance calls within Mexico.

I have broad band through Cablemas and its around $400 peso a month. Its up almost 100% of the time these days and its as fast as my old computer can handle it. I get youtube videos without those freeze ups.

The only problem with the Aircard seems to be the monthly data limit. My primary internet goal is to stream baseball games adn I think that gets one up to the limit pretty early each month in the summer. No problem in the winter.

I'm sitting here looking at the bill that came today and discover that I made an error in my other post: NO long distance to the USA or Canada is included in the cost of our Telmex service. <20 lashes> Unlimited long distance within Mexico IS included, along with the other services I mentioned.
