time is getting close

June 30th my belongings are scheduled to ship to Mexico. I have to stay behind to try to get rid of belongings and sell one of the cars. I cannot believe all the stuff I collected over the years. It seems like we are only getting rid of half. I guess we should be on the hoarders. Well maybe we are not that bad. We over came the problem with getting the car shipped. I got out of state plates just waiting on the title. Will drive to Florida and swap the plates out and send the old ones back to New York.
Half of me wants to drive down, but I feel ill at ease with all that is going on in Mexico. I know people do the drive all the time but I am siding on the side of caution.
We should arrive at our home hopefully by July 15 give or take. Can't wait to get there.

Good for you, Tony. It's nail-biter time with all the stuff that has to happen. I remember from 3 years ago.

Final destination is Cozumel, right? You can start calling yourself "Island Boy" soon. Hope it goes well for you. Try not to worry too much, and good luck.

Florida uses only a rear plate. Buy a Florida vanity plate to put on the front, to avoid meeting enterprising Mexican police officers. (I may be outdated)

I put a MX flag plate on the front, never been questioned.

We were planning to drive back to Maine this year for the summer and return by car in the fall and make this our new program going forward instead of flying. We stopped in Guanajuato -San Miguel to convoy with two friends who regularly drive to Texas to give workshops on building with compressed earth blocks. The day before leaving on our drive our friends decided to fly due to border violence at Nuevo Laredo. We called another guy who used to drive over regularly, a former police officer in Leon, he has also stopped driving. We checked the blog contributed to by former border patrol officers who update conditions daily, M3report http://M3report.wordpress.com

We made a tough decision to leave our car and pop trailer and fly back, smuggling our slightly heavier than allowed cocker spaniel under the seat. We parked our car in a friend's garage, a few days later it was broken into and everything we were unable to bring on the plane stolen and the rear window broken. Hard to say whether we would have been better off going for it, gangs had been using cars as barricades that week in their battle with a rival gang and the military.
My question to the forum is, are any of you driving across the border to the US and if so where are you crossing? I am thinking it may be worth the additional miles to cross at Tijuana.

Do you realize that Florida is one of the states that has problematic plates? If you don't renew the plates every year they charge you a penalty each year for not doing so. If you are ever in Florida and do renew or get pulled over you will have to pay the back penalities.

And you need to maintain a minimum insurance to keep your Florida drivers license valid. If you don't, the license will be suspended.

They are not Florida Plates. I am only driving to Florida to ship the car out of Miami.
I am driving down with N.Y plates and switching to the out of state plates just before it goes to the dock for shipping.

Out of state plates are plates from another state. You live in one state and apply for plates in another state.
