In my opinion the situation in Cheran has gone into a process of degeneration and very quickly. At first it seemed a fresh of breath air but now they have resorted to blocking highways, downtown Morelia, committing acts of vandalism, etc., and this in turn affects third parties. Now they are crying that they don´t have enough food to go around but yet they have the capability to cause ravage wherever and whenever they want. I am really disappointed for thinking it could be a spark to an independent and common sense movement but as always they fall into the same clichéd tactics.

Anónimo, go to http://www.vozdemichoacan.com.mx/. At the top right of the page, there's a search field. Type in 'Cheran' and the most recent articles will come up. There are probably other newspapers with similar information.

Let's learn to do some of our own follow-up research!

Good tip from Esperanza. Just because I had time to kill I emailed www.micheran.com which is based in the States and I layed out some of my observations and dislikes. That was about a week ago and I still have not received a reply.

Brecky, the first active link you posted takes us to an article dated August 2010. It would be helpful if you could post a more current date for this website, since many 'war on drugs'-related activities have changed in Mexico since a year ago.

I didn't see anything actually about current events in Mexico in the second link. Did you find anything there that would give helpful and current information about today's situation in Cherán?

The link in your first post is to the Morelia newspaper Quadratín. Quadratín can be very sensationalistic. Another, more balanced view of Michoacán news is here: http://www.cambiodemichoacan.com.mx/pseccion.php?seccion=16. Click on 'SUCESOS' at the top of the page to see news about drug-related events in Morelia and other parts of Michoacán. The news about the assassination in San Lorenzo makes me particularly sad, as I have several friends who live there.

With 21 bodies found in one day, I don't see how any news organization might report without some sort of sensationalism? If this had happened in Juarez, it probably wouldn't have been treated as a big deal but to happen in/around Morelia it is certainly an unusual event. Having read all of the referenced media reports and many other Mexican media sources, most have handled their reports in much the same manner. On the other hand, BLOG NARCO provided plenty of photos to truly sensationalize the event!

The logic is that the indigenous people from Capacuaro are the one's who took the police officers hostage and really has nothing to do with Cheran itself. From the post I read it seems to indicate that the people from Cheran are the one's the took the police officers as hostage.
