ROBERTO'S Restaurant Review in Ajijic - A Different Perspective

Last night 11 of us from our Bi Monthly Dinner group went to Roberto's restaurant. We looked at the menu which showed "Entrees 2 for 1". Great we thought. We ordered our drinks, then came bread, dipping sauces and Carrot Fritters. The usual nice start.

Then we ordered our meals from all over the menu. One person had Chicken Picatta, One had Steak Diane, Two had Brisket, Two had Liver and Onions. Three had Jersey Shore Platters (combos of scallops, shrimp & fish). I had Pork Loin with apples, gravy, sweet potatos and mashed potatos.

Two of 3 people having the Jersey Shore platter had over fried meals. My Pork Loin which was normally very moist and tender was anything but that. I had to ask for more gravy, but it still didn't moisten it. We asked if Roberto was there and was told he was at the beach.

We felt that the food is not always consistent. We were very disappointed, but had not been before. I think they'll be off our group list for the rest of the year.

Couple of thoughts on that reveiw, John:
First, that twofer for Thursday and Friday nights turned into a nightmare in the kitchen because of the huge (and largely unexpected ) crowd that showed up. Not surprisingly, the food got shortchanged in the process. I think the offer was a bad idea, especially since Bobby wasn't there to supervise the kitchen himself and the new jefe is still getting his feet wet.

Roberto has been trying to break in a new potential owner/chef.....Omar. He's a young man and this is probably his first attempt to run a restaurant. It was probably more than he can handle at this point, though it's obvious that he's trying.

Roberto himself wants and needs to retire to his condo at the beach. He's no spring chicken and since he fell of the roof, he's been in serious pain. Who can blame him for trying to turn over the work at this point?

However, I also agree that things are slipping since he's not around. Too bad, but there it is. Maybe Omar will get on top of the problem and things will go back to the very nice dining option it was under Bobby's direction. Maybe not.
Time will tell. We may go back on a "normal" evening when it isn't so busy and report our experience.

Gringal - It was not crowded at all that Friday night, so I blame the Chef for overcooking the meals.

If that was the case.........you're right to blame the cook.
The one time we were there on a twofer Friday (never again), all the outside tables were full and we had to sit inside, which was no treat in the heat.
