My crystal ball prediction is that new law will come online AFTER the administration changes next year.

It looks to me that anyone retired with a sufficient income can get permanent residence right away

Or 2 years with Mexican spouse/temporary residence and no income requirements (I don't see income requirements for temporary residence)

And you can come and go all you want on either.

The thing I don't get is that a visitor (like FMM now if I'm reading this all correctly) cannot change their status to permanent resident in-country unless you have a Mexican spouse or link to someone already established in Mexico. I wonder how that works?

Who knows, this IS Mexico? It would be nice, I guess, to be permanente status seeing as how I am a permanent resident, but I"m more concerned if they build in some gotchas like losing my NOB plates etc.

I looked at Belize this year, they want a 3 year or newer car or it would cost me $6,500 to import a 6 year old Jeep? - now, that's that kind of stuff I worry about here. Mexico is schizophrenic, it has at least two personalities, one says they like us and want to help us by making things easier etc, but the other face is more interested in sticking it to us every chance they get, and writing whole new sets of regs could be an opportunity to open Pandora's box, but as I said, "who knows, this IS Mexico".
