Living in Mexico - short term

Can't Post |
We are in a bit of an awkward situation ... our house is sold and will be taken over by the new owners in mid-Dec. My new job in another state doesn't start until March. We had originally expected it to start in January but the timing didn't work out. Rather than sitting around in an uninteresting apartment, waiting for March to roll around, we want to explore living in Mexico during the interim. We have 3 kids who we will homeschool during that time.
Can anyone make recommendations on what towns we might explore? Low cost of living is extremely important since we'll be living off of savings. Safety is also important. Would prefer to be on the East side of Mexico since it's closer to us and we would travel through the East part of Texas to get there.
Thanks in advance ....

Well, to begin with, I wouldnt tell the people in the embassy or border that you plan to live in Mexico because really what you are doing is visiting for some months... This would put you in the tourist classification.
Well, you will be limited as to what you cant take with you. I am not totally sure as to what you can take exactly when you go into the country. I would suposse just as if you were traveling, only spare stuff that you can carry with you.
If you want my suggestion, go somewhere away from the border states, there is not much to see there and unfortunately they are not very safe.
I would recommend that you stay in Xalapa, in the state of Veracruz. Its a quiet city with very nice people in it. Many are students. Its really a college town and the state capital of Veracruz. Very cultural, you can go listen to classical music often if you want and besides its well connected. What I mean with this is that everytime you feel like exploring some more of Mexico you can go to the travel agencies or you can just make a schedule of your own, go to the bus central and buy a ticket to wherever you want to go. If I was you thats what I would do. Bus stations are not at all like American bus places where the scum of the earth seems to gather. Buses are to mexicans what planes are to americans. So you should be pretty safe traveling around that way. As in every place be mindful of your surroundings. Xalapa doesnt have bad places, it is a pretty quiet and peaceful place. The cost of living for a house rental would be aprox. 300 to 400 dollars. Then again if you want a small apartment or so, you can find bargains from 150 bucks to 200 bucks a month. I am sure that mexican tenants are always happy to rent to a foreigner with money. Also, Xalapa offers great places to eat for a pretty economical price. I would definitely check that out. I tell you this because I live there and Ive been around a lot. And the place that always seems safe and feels like home to me its that town. Now if you want to go to really cool mexican style places, you have to be very weary of where you are and what you are getting into. Chiapas is a wonderful beautiful state... nothing compares to the ruins that you can see in there and the mexican flavored towns that you can visit around this state. However, its a troubled region and as a foreigner I would not visit without guidance or a very good knowledge of how to get around in places.
Its just like everywhere else, you have to know where you are and have common sense.
Anyway if I can help you or answer other questions, post more and Ill try.

Thank you for that great info! It gives me a place to start!
I have one very important question .... assuming I cannot afford to make a trip just to check things out, do you have any suggestions on how to proceed? Should we just get our visas, jump in the car and check it out, stay at a hotel for the first week until we find a house to rent? Since you live there, can you give me any names of people to call about renting houses?
One thing we thought we'd like to do while there for 2 months is some volunteer work. Would there be opportunities for this is Xalapa? Our youngest child was adopted, so we'd really like to volunteer in an orphanage if there is one nearby.
Thanks again ....

: Thank you for that great info! It gives me a place to start!
*No problem! Glad I could help you

: I have one very important question .... assuming I cannot afford to make a trip just to check things out, do you have any suggestions on how to proceed?
*Well that is always very much up to you, visas can be issued at the border. Although I recommend that you stop by a mexican embassy if you can and get them there. You can always stay at small cozy hotels that I think are not as expensive as if you went to a five star hotel.
Right now I'm in the USA and I can't really find out anything for you. I am leaving for Xalapa in about a week and once I get there I will try to gather up some phone numbers and info of places that I have personally stayed at. I would plan on staying for about 2 weeks in a hotel, just in case that you dont find a place to live at so fast. Once you are there if you know a bit of spanish, you can always buy a local newspaper and check out the houses for rent.
Posada del Cafeto is one of them that to me was ok and it had that cozy feeling. A long time ago they used to have some sort of room where they had a small kitchen area and the room was of good size. They were always very clean and courtious.
I think I just found a link for you:
http://www.xalapa.net/
If you know a bit of spanish you will be able to figure it out pretty much. They have a list of hotels and their approximate prices. Im actually surprised to see that they are quite expensive.
About the house I would recommend that you just get down there and actually talk to the people who are going to rent the hous and that you check the place over before taking any rushed decisions.

: One thing we thought we'd like to do while there for 2 months is some volunteer work. Would there be opportunities for this is Xalapa?
Well to be honest about that I dont know. I know that there are orphanages everywhere and you could more than likely help out.
You could also speak to some schools and try to enroll into teaching English to kids with low resources. They schools would probably try to pay you but whatever they pay you it would be a joke considering the amounts that you make in the USA (even if its minimum wage).
The other thing is to go to a community center and teach people english.
Im sure that there are many things you can do if you really want to help.
