Pools in hot or windy climates lose water to evaporation, but not that much. I'm surrounded by desert, with summer temps often over 100, and don't lose more than about a centimeter in a day. In your case it sounds like the water loss happens when the pump is running, meaning the leak is pressure-related. When the pump stops, air could be getting in wherever water was being forced out. As whynotwrite mentioned earlier, air in the lines is the likely reason for the pump losing prime. In my case it was getting in around the damaged gasket.
You said the system is new, so be sure to ask the owner if it's still under warranty before messing around with it much. IMO the problem is likely to be the installation rather than the equipment, but ya never know.
