When I was a Spanish major in university in the States back in the 1960s, I was told by various professors that using an accent mark over capital letters was optional, with no reason given why this was so.

That's what I've always understood as well. Essentially, printer's didn't have upper case typefaces with accents.

My husband especially likes the "little town, big fire" saying Esperanza taught him years ago. Living in Ajijic we tend to use it daily along with the requiste head gesture and eye-rolling.

I have always translated that as "small town, big hell" which IMO is the accurate meaning of the saying.

Thanks for that. Trying to find the best English translation for the Spanish, it looks like infierno can be inferno in English, and an inferno is an especially vicious fire. Make of these facts, what you will NEOhio and Bennie.

My late, bi-lingual Mexican wife always interpreted that saying as “Small town, big hell” too.

She was from Mexico City, so a lot of places were small towns to her, although she never understood why I never wanted to live in Ajijic.

I was introduced to the phrase "pueblo chico, infierno grande" by a friend from Guadalajara, and it's definitely "small town, big hell". Ajijic is the first small town I've ever lived in. The phrase is highly useful.

I'm helping some folks with English and they've taught me some good ones lately. I hope I get these right:

"Me tiene hasta la madre" (Which I take to mean to be completely and angrily fed up with something)

There's another one that makes me laugh, but I don't think I have it right. If you're asked how things are going, and everything's going fine, it translates literally something like, "Everything's on wheels". Something like that. I think I heard....

"sobres ruedas"

Does anyone know if that's it?

Maritsa, I think the second one is "vale (or "cae") gordo" meaning something is not to your liking, to put it mildly :) !
