I'd be very careful with the "giant mouse trap" kind of rat traps. Years ago I lived in a carriage house where I was getting field mice and a couple of wood rats. The rat traps can kill or seriously injure a dog, so had to put wire cages around them to keep the dog away... and when I heard the big SNAP one night, I saw half a field mouse flying through the kitchen... yuck!

How about a large snake or two?

I face an open field, but you are right. Pellets, traps? Lots of conflicting advice. I just need to get rid of the rats without causing harm to my dog or any other animal, except the rats. T

The small cagelike traps are too small for a lab to get into so your dog should not be a problem. Rats are more active at night so set the trap at night and take it out during the day. Keep the dog inside a night and this should do the trick.

You are not the only one with a rat infestaion. Many rural areas of Mexico are expierencing a rat infestation. Mostly due to a lack of rain, but also a norm at this time of the year. We also started to have some show up. Within one week they were all gone. We also have several pets (3 Labs, a cat and several parrots. Here is your answer.

A bit pricy and at first I was a little dubious not anymore. So shell out your $100 USD and buy a couple (batteries not included). I found the best bait is dry pet food and a little peanut butter.

T sometimes drives me nuts also . . . . . as I am sure I well do some others at times. Hopefully not as much (smiling), but this time the poster has asked good question, and deserves a good answer as several have been. Now don't get carried away T! (smiling)

As one who does live in Mexico and has lived in a few different parts of this country over the years, there does seem to be a seasonal rat problem, not to mention a continuing mouse problem. Do not be surprised if you catch the occasional small squirrel with this trap I mentioned earlier.

Occasionally in war there is collateral damage. This is one of those times. All I have to do when that happens is to remember that a squirrel is also a rodent (in reality) and carries the same diseases. Cute as they may be, they are just as dangerous to your pets, as any rat or mouse can be.

It's mother's day (NOB) and we must remember that Mother Nature provided rats. Then some of them got clever and bred themselves into cute rats with fuzzy tails. Charming, but also problematic from the human viewpoint.

Cats were also provided, and balance generally achieved. The trouble was, people liked those pretty soft creatures so well that they often forget their evolutionary purpose: they declaw them, keep them indoors and what you get are cats with human "staff" and happy rodents.

I had a friend in the country NOB who had a large dog and also a rodent problem. He got a couple of big macho outdoor cats and of course, King dog went into action. Grrrrr. Cats know how to take care of themselves. One swipe did the job. King dog adjusted and everybody "just got along" thereafter. No more rodent problem. No traps or poisons needed.

So there is another suggestion. The Animal Shelter can provide you with the "organic solution" if you so desire.

The "organic" solution is fine as long as the person taking on the cat/cats does it for the animal's life and does not regard the animal as a throwaway as soon as the rat population is decimated.

Dumping them or having the cats euthanized would not even be practical. Rodents are an ongoing problem and the "organic solution" is also ongoing. Farmers know this. They are called "barn cats", and are not treated as household pets.

As anyone who is familiar with country life knows, most of the animals have a "job" to do, from the dogs to the horses and the cats. Just as we have or have had "jobs", there is nothing cruel about that. What is inhumane is people adopting an animal as a family pet and then abandoning it when they leave.

The box traps work great. They're a live trap and come in lots of sizes. I use one for raccoons and possums....they are then escorted to the National Forest...a long way off. Rats? Nope no free ride for them. I know putting the trap into a bucket or barrel of water sounds cruel.... especially from the point of view of the rat...but that's probably the safest way to get rid of them. There's just too many ways it can go wrong when you resort to poison.

Thanks to many private messages from folks who have had the same experience that I am going through, but did not want to publicly get involved, I have rat pellets and will be as careful as possible not to injure anything other than the rats. Thank you to those who were trying to be helpful. T.

Call up your scorpion spray guy, he will take care of your rats, although he may want to use poison, which we would not allow. One of our neighbours had his dog poisoned with rat killer - not something you would wish on your own or someone else's pet. Insist on traps. Good luck.

You seem to be one of those people that were included in another forum on this site . . . . . "Should we give advice to Newbies" . . . . Either you just do not get it or you just do not want to get it.

You ask people for advise and whe you get it, you stay with the one rat killer (pellets) that could easily kill you beloved dog . . . . I just don't get it! Why do you waste peoples time to help you, and then you just continue to put your dog in danger. Maybe you just didn't read ALL of the various threads.

I for one will not be providing you with any more advise or suggestions or advice on anything.

I hope your dog lives through your "cheap way out" to rid your rat problem. I think if I were your dog I would lift my leg on your leg until you felt that warm wet feeling!

Get this real straight T, I am not at all upset that you are not taking my advice. Several people answering your OP were giving advice or suggestions because of your concern for your dog. I for one am upset that you take so little precaution using pellets. Ever try finding one pellet in the grass? Your dog will find it easy though. I am really upset that you REALLY think so little of your dog, you would even think of using a poison. That's what has me pissed! Ever see a dog die from consumption of Rat Poison? I have, and it is not a pretty sight! Surely not worth the few dollars for a 100% safe way to get rid of your rats, when there is such an alternative available. IMHO
