Is this another horror story? No, not really. Photographed the property damage, contracted masons to perform the repairs to the damaged property, paid the traffic fines, taking pix of the work in progress. Next is to get property owner affirmation that the repairs are complete to his satisfaction (this is where we get the municipal folks involved as the owner will never be satisfied) show to the Judge, get whats left of the car released from impound. Its a pretty well defined process, no big deal really.

Hmmm, I dont know if its good fora etiquette to reply to my own post....the repairs to the damaged property are complete, all that remains to release our car from the corralon is an affirmation from the US that the car is not stolen. Wait, its registered in our name....maybe we stole it from ourselves?? Oh well whats another 500 pesos per day impound fee in the grand scheme of things.

The neighbors' collective opinion is that the damage isnt going to buff out 8<) So we chained the back of the car to a light standard reinforcement, chained the front to the neighbor's tractor trailer and sloooooly pulled the car back to more or less straight. It'll be back on the road in no time Bien Tijuaneado 8<)

Well, yea, its a dodge durango, its not really a truck because it doesn't haul anything. I consider it to be a modern station wagon (3rd seat folds down). The SUV designator was applied by marketing, I believe, because nobody wants a station wagon.
My wife loaned the "car" to her dumass nephew who neglected to tell her he doesn't know how to drive. He got about two blocks from the house and hit a block wall at about 50 mph. Or at least some speed significantly greater than zero.
As they say in Mexico: "No pasa nada."

Maybe the nephew isn't a total dumbass, just able to creatively recycle. He turned an SUV turn into a house. :-)

Ooh, sorry but this is going sound like a little tough love. You have used up one of your nine lives with this one. Considered it a free lesson (although I am sure it was very expensive.) and learn from it. Nobody died this time. Even then, your only really stuck with the Funeral Expenses but it probably would make you feel bad if someone had been killed. No matter how much they cry, the nephew could still be in jail and guess who has to bail him out in order to get his car back from the impound. It could have been much worse. This could have turned into a real "Crime and Punishment". You fell in and were able to get out this time. Next time you might not be so lucky with the system. I lived in TJ for years and I still own a Storefront there, and I would say that you are far more likely to die in an auto accident, then from bullets, at the hands of people who made the same choice you did. Most people who read this are probably thinking (I hope) that they would never lend anyone in their wife's family, their car. If he didn't have a drivers license, then the insurance company doesn't have to pay(if you had insurance). We can't let this country pull us down to it's level of ni modo. We have to stay above it and sometimes our survival as expatriates counts on our not making these kinds of choices.

Well, if you are heading where I think you are, it isn't me. I do not care about the loss, I have eight cars...well now only maybe seven. What I care about is that the dumass nephew made the decision to lie about his ability to drive, putting others at risk. This is part of what the previous poster referred to as marrying the whole family. My intention of posting was to share my experience with others : what will happen if you crash a car, what expenses can you expect to incur, how much time needs investing to make it all come out right. Yea, we paid all of dumass' fines to keep him out of jail, paid to rebuild the damaged wall to specifications far better than the original, paid the impound fees, and we still have a wrecked car to repair. But nobody has asked about any of that....so nevermind.

We are still only three; my daughter is fourteen years old now, can you believe it? Several relatives live in Rosarito which is about 20 min drive the back way.

Sorry Alex, maybe that was out of line. I didn't realize your post was pedagogic. I have an extended mexican family of about half the small town where we live and I responded sort of "mexican".
