Cheran under siege.

I´m surprised the subject hasn´t been posted days ago. In a nutshell the people of Cheran have banded together to defend themselves from organized crime that has been destroying the community forest and running extortions on them. The state government has passed the buck to the federal government therefore Cheran is in a Masada like situation. Unfortunately, I haven´t seen any news articles in English to post. Stay away from the area ´cause it could blow up anytime now.

OP is correct, the situation in Cherán is very tense right now. There are frequent road blockades, kidnappings, etc, all related to wood rights and the theft of pine trees.

Cherán is in the Meseta Purhépecha, the next town northeast of Paracho as you drive north from Uruapan. Gorgeous and interesting area, but dicey at the moment.

Don't go up there until this is resolved. It would be very difficult to be caught in the middle of this situation. All of these stories (in Spanish) are from April 28 forward to today.

You can check out www.micheran.com. It is a website run by people of Cheran living in the States, in Spanish. They post the latest happenings, news articles and uncensored video.

Unless the reader/viewer is a Spanish-speaker, the link you posted is very difficult to navigate. I had a hard time finding any pertinent news and I read Spanish as well as I read English.

That´s part of the problem. National news media hasn´t given it the proper coverage and I guess the local reporters are terrified of visiting Cheran. Then again it might be that they are all too busy reporting on the Lady GaGa concert in Guadalajara.

The links I posted are from La Voz de Michoacán, out of Morelia. Do a search on the website for Cherán. There are lots more links.

One of the difficulties of staying up-to-date with Mexican small-town news is that outside the immediate vicinity of the town, it isn't important. There's really very little 'national' news, and the same is true in the USA. Unless something big happens, like the recent spate of tornadoes in Alabama and other southern states, the focus is all on the place where you happen to buy your El Informador (Guadalajara), your Reforma (DF), your Chicago Tribune, your Washington Post, etc.

Alot a chatter about "the people" feeling betrayed by La Familia cartel since it is alleged one of their members El Guero is behind the attacks in Cheran. Either he has gone rogue or has the blessings of the cartel. Don´t be surprised if he ends up dead since he is a liabilty and the cartel will somehow try to clean up its image because without the support it currently enjoys from "the people" its existence will be in jeopardy.
