Becoming a legal resident of The US is not easy or a quick process usually. Contrary to popular belief, being married to a citizen of The US does not confer the right to enter, or live in The US automatically. A visa or a Permanent Residency Card, commonly called a Green Card, must be applied for, and granted, a process that usually takes several years. Most visa applications are routinely denied several times. Until recently, the visa application fees were forfeited, and another fee had to be paid with every new application. I was lucky enough to meet my late Mexican wife in Alaska, she was visiting an uncle up there, she had entered The US legally on a visa. When we first decided to be married, one of the first things she told me was that she did not want to become a US citizen, an she did not want to spend the rest of her life in America, that is why I am now living in Mexico. Her father was an American, but her birth had not been registered with The US Embassy in Mexico City, her hometown. The US Immigration service told me that since she had entered The US legally with a Visa, that she could remain in the US while her Permanent Residency Card (Green card) was being processed, if she had not entered The US legally, she would need to return to her home country until her Green card was issued, usually a very time consuming process. Laws and regulations change over time, the process may be different now. We received my wife's Green card in about one month, and a non-working Social Security number for her about one month later. The Social Security number is usually important to get a US drivers license, to be a joint owner of a bank account, insurance policies, etc. IF a Mexican citizen is already in The US legally, it is much simpler to be a married couple in The US. We continued to live in Alaska until my retirement. Being in The US legally is the key. If a person marries a Mexican citizen in Mexico with the intention to live in The US, it will usually be a very time consuming process to move the new spouse there.
