You are correct, once again. Folks who live in El Centro Ajijic, do walk more because they cannot get their cars out of their garage. The devil made me say this. T.

We gave a check for $18000 US to the local dealer when we ordered our Honda FIT last July. That included all taxes and fees. We then discovered that the gov't. had suspended the tax on new cars to help the new car dealers, at least for that year. We were issued a refund for that. We paid it again in 2011, but it is scheduled to phase out and be gone for 2012.

The $18,000 doesn't mean anything for comparing the two countries without noting the exchange rate at the time of purchase. The exchange rate last July was around 12.80, so you paid $231,000p for the car. At todays rate, the person would need to write a check for $19,900 for the same car. Now do you see why you can't compare prices here to NOB without a reference to the exchange rate.

Also, you're using the word "tax", but there are two different components to what you refer to as "tax". There's the IVA and the Tenencia. When you said that the "gov't. had suspended the tax", are you referring to Tenencia? That's the one that is due to be phased out in 2012. The IVA is a totally separate issue.

We paid what we paid to order the car we wanted. There were no options to pay differently. Since we had no intention to going to the states and all that entailed........we selected what we considered the best and most economical option.

There is a fee or tax or whatever it should be called on all new cars that was supposed to be paid each year for ten years. Apparently my terminology was not correct, but I'm sure you know the fee I'm referring to. That was the one which was suspended for last year when we bought the car, and the $18,000 U.S. included that fee.......which was later refunded. So what did we pay for the car? I'll leave you to figure that out.
My point was that we wanted a nationalized car for various good reasons, and sometimes, paper savings aren't the whole issue. We don't buy luxury cars......ever......on principle. It's a waste of funds. Since we aren't interested in impressing anyone, there's no percentage in it in other ways. We buy what we need, with the features that we wanted. We got them.

Now, let's consider the cost of a trip to the U.S. in order to save something on the cost of the car. Couple of days up, couple of days to locate car and purchase, couple of days back: hotels, meals and the general aggravation of taking a trip in July and putting up with being in the good old U.S.A.... As they say with VISA ads: PRICELESS!.

...and that is why we bought a new car locally. We were well aware of the money issues at the time, including the exchange rate.

We have now wandered far afield from the original thread and I can't think of any reason to continue this particular discussion.

Well then.........you just missed a great show, when we had the extra cab, extra long pickup truck last year. People would stop and stare while my esposo maneuvered it out of our gate on one pass. Sometimes they even clapped. It was rather fun to watch.

So there. The devil made me reply.
