heading to Chapala area from Laredo

I have friends driving down early next month from Austin. They will cross at Bridge 2, Laredo - the question is go via Zacatecas or Matehuala - we don't go to and from Texas so have no solid input but my inclination would be to go through Matehuala.
Right or wrong??

Matehuala.

From today's El Siglo de Torreón: (edited Google translation)

Federal police reports and complaints of citizens can locate the most unsafe stretches of road for tourists planning to vacation harriers this Easter.
A report by the Transport Committee of the Chamber of Deputies said that roadside robberies have increased 80 percent over the past two years and nine out of 10 burglaries occur at gunpoint.
For travelers from the border with Texas, the most insecure sections are between Monterrey and Laredo, Reynosa and Matamoros. The stretch Cuencamé to Fresnillo has been frequently reported as the scene of robbery and kidnapping. In this case, authorities recommend using the alternate route Saltillo to Matehuala

I wonder if they are evaluating sections based on absolute number of incidents reported or as a percentage of traffic volume?

No matter what figures they are using to arrive at the results, don't you think they might fit: "A 10% risk on a drive is simply unacceptable"?

Yes I do, Neil. But if you had to choose between two routes would you rather take the one with 10 incidents in 100,000 cars over the last week or the one with 5 incidents in 10,000 cars?

I would simply like to know for purposes of better evaluating the situation, not that they bothered to give any numbers or percentages.

In this context, what in the world does harriers mean?

So far as I can tell, it is Google mistranslation of a misspelled word in the original.
"...para turistas laguneros..." I think the writer was trying to refer to tourist coming to Laguna as this area is called.

I would agree about choosing route A or route B based upon the statistics but that might be a bit much to expect. Route A or Route B may never approach the 1% figure that you previously stated.

I was talking to one of our suppliers today. He was the Gringo who was "truckjacked" back in November on the cuota outside of Monterrey. Certainly no amateur in that he has lived in MX for over 15 years and has driven the route to the border too many times to count. His words: "I will not drive to the US border ever again until I feel that it the situation has stabilized". His projection 5 to 7 years. By flying out and back, they certainly would be under the 1% threshold!

Ok, let's not argue over beans. I have no idea what the actual numbers or percentages are. I was simply musing about the criteria used in deciding which routes were dangerous and which were recommended. Nothing in between the lines.

Hello All,

I have found this article very thought provoking to say the least. Chinagringo has some very good points in his math, and I also agree that as Neil asks, isn’t "a 10% risk on a drive is simply unacceptable"? You bet it is, no question about it. However one must also realize there are inherent risks in all driving on any roads NOB or SOB. Come up here to the RGV and I will tell you while it might not be a guy or a few guys with automatic weapons, two or three guys in a ¾ ton pickup weaving in and out of traffic at 80- to 90 MPH is, or can be just as deadly. This is not an isolated incident. It is a constant in the RGV especially on 83 has to be one of the most dangerous highways NOB. By the way this is not only on HWY 83, but on the side roads as well. The drivers here are frankly NUTS! I am absolutely not a slow driver. I am many times pushing the limit by 10 MPH or so, but I pale in comparison to these crazy drivers who (at high speeds) pass on the right at high speed and from both right and left cutting right in front of you.
Nightly here (every single night of the week) on any of three different TV channels one can hear the four, five, six and more incidents of confiscated drugs, guns including fully auto weapons, hand grenades, bullet proof vests, night vision goggles and a great amount of ammo not to mention the great quantities of cash being smuggled and caught at the border (bound). The roads here are just as dangerous as SOB, only thing missing is decapitation and skinning. So far this week (two days old) one person shot in his vehicle and the vehicle burned and another hit from behind, driver of the rear car getting out walking to the car in front and popping off a few rounds critically injuring the driver. Drugs in the car the driver was shot in. At least 10 to 12 seizures of drugs in those two days; drugs of all kinds by the cargo ship loads are being confiscated here by the various police agencies, border patrol and ICE agents and it is really beginning to p – off the cartels. Action here is definitely climbing. . Folks, face it . . . . it’s all over the place and dead is dead. So take the least risky route for your own mind and pray you chose the right one. If it’s your time, then it’s your time. It’s all a crap shoot and all about a little black bean!

Hi bournemouth,

I agree with some of the other posters. Matahuala hands down. As you may by now know I take this route many times during the year and always stop in Matahuala. There are several hotels there in the economic or budget level that are quite sufficient. There are also plenty of places to gas up and get some junk food or sandwiches and pop for the rest of the trip. It is very easy on and off the Hwy 57 north or south bound. I found the Las Palmas a nice property nut not $900 pesos a night nice. I have never pais more than $400 pesos and lept as well as I did the one time I want to the Las Palmas. The restaurant at the Las Palmas is good and the price there is OK.

Sol y Luna is shabby but clean and accepts animals. Next door to Las Sevillanas, a good torta stop.

The quote feature doesn't always work. I previously said that I have not heard of any specific incidents on Highway 54 between Saltillo and Zacatecas, but that my inclination would be to take 57 through Matahuela like you said. Because of the general conditions up here, I personally try to avoid highways with long unpopulated stretches if a reasonable alternative is available.
