I just need any advice from anyone that has lived in Oaxaca and knows what I might be getting myself into!

: I just need any advice from anyone that has lived in Oaxaca and knows what I might be getting myself into!
I agree with the previous person posting that you should really visit first, prior making the commitment to live in Oaxaca or anywhere.
But, as far as what you might be getting yourself into, I can only tell you that for me personally, it was the best experience of my life! I lived there for 2 years almost 13 years ago and met my wife there. I fell in love with the culture and the people. Now we're seriously considering moving back! (Actually, we've been seriously considering moving back for 13 years.) I'd say the better you are at Spanish the richer your experience will be. Another advantage is that it's quite affordable.
If you're not well off, I'd recommend leaving the car behind. Yet another personal observation, but I think a car in Oaxaca is an unnecessary expense that you can live without. You'll lose pounds and feel healthier walking everywhere and taking an occassional bus or taxi.
Obviously, the drawback is, the vast majority of people can't make nearly as much in Mexico as in the US. But, looking through some recent threads in this newsgroup, it sounds like telecommuting or working seasonally in the US might be an option?

: : The question is like asking "I am thinking of moving to San Francisco California, what do I need to know. Check out the search feature of your browser. There are many sites dedicated to Oaxaca, both designed by the govt of tourism and those put up by expats. You will get much better results if you ask specific questions. Best yet, plan a visit and plan on staying for a while before you decide. Don't ever, ever, chuck it all go anywhere sight unseen or on the recommendation of anyone in the whole world. Nearly all of us who live in Oaxaca love it. Of course if we didn't we would live somewhere else in Mexico. One caution: don't plan on moving here to make your living unless you are starting a business. You can't make a living wage teaching English and there are no time shares. Nearly all other jobs are restricted by law to Mexicans, which is as it should be.
: Thank you for that advice! I am sure if I do move there I will be okay. Since my husband is from there and if we need a place to stay immediatly, we have his mom's home. That is our plan: to open a store. My husband is the one that had the idea and he knows since he grew up there and lived there most of his life. Thanks again.

Why in the world would someone married to a native ask some gringo anything?
