Exactly when did Jello become the national dessert of Mexico? Seriously. Is there some historical underpinning, or was it the result of a concerted marketing effort?

A Mexican friend of a friend opened a little tienda in Copoya and one of the items he sold the most of was Jello. I was truly amazed, since most of my neighbors do not have refrigerators. He explained that Jello is the hottest new drink now, just mixed with water. ¿Quien sabe?
