There's a 17 question general knowledge quiz about Mexico in the Christian Science Monitor. I'll fess up and admit I only got 16 of them right.

14, not bad for a non-resident I guess. 5 years ago before I was on these forums I probably would have scored 10 or less.

Picked Saltillo not Monterrey on the map. They are so close and I thought it was a trick question since Monterrey is better known.

I picked D.F. population as third not sixth.

I picked Texas revolution not annexation as cause for the war.

I got the one on the Sierra mountain range but it was a guess.

Fun test. I got two wrong....the Mexico City population question and the map of Chihuahua question. The latter was more of a stupid mistake made in haste....test-taking skills are a bit rusty. 8-)

It seems that the most commonly missed question has been the Mexico City population one. I wondered if the #6 ranking was the generally accepted true position. Using Sr. Google, I found that rankings ranged from a high of 4th to a low of 14th and none that listed Mexico City as 6th. So did we all really get the wrong answer?

Very good quiz. I got them all right, having first read your comments below on the Mexico City population question, but I would not have picked sixth place for Mexico City. If you picked third place, you were not wrong. The ranking depends, as we know, on what definition of “city” is used. Apparently the sixth-place result comes from a “city population” definition; given here as “Agglomerations include a central city and neighboring communities linked to it (e.g.) by continuous built-up areas or commuters. Some agglomerations have more than one central city.”

I missed a couple - picked Saltillo and missed the population of Mexico

The amazing thing is that Reefhound didn't question the data. And no one started arguing that some one else answered wrong.

Interestingly, today's Geo-Mexico newsletter had a discussion about Mexico's population. In it, there was a link to a city population ranking based upon preliminary 2010 census results. Mexico City is listed with a population slightly over 20 million:
http://geo-mexico.com/?p=3148

This figure closely aligns with that published in WorldAtlas where Mexico City is ranked 3rd in the world:

Hello all,

Enjoyed the quiz. Got 15. I, too, ranked Mexico City as third for an error, and I chose the Metropolitan University of Mexico over Monterrey Tech, because I thought it was a private institution. I may be right there, but it probably doesn't have the wide outreach that Monterrey Tech has.

Wonder where the Christian Science Monitor got the idea to post the quiz? I would have expected a quiz like this to be generated by Tony
Burton on the Mexico Atlas site rather than the Christian Science Monitor.

As ever, jerezano

I missed two also. I missed about the university in Monterrey and also the state question related to the state of Chihuahua. No excuses. this is a good learning experiences, I do hope that Mex Connect can also maybe have a monthly quiz about Mexican culture, architecture, art, politics, geography, cooking and what ever other subjects might be interesting.

Those who didn’t know about the ITESM, aka Técnologica de Monterrey (colloquially known as the ‘Tec’) may be interested to know that it’s not just a university ‘in’ Monterrey, but country-wide, with campuses in 25 cities. The Mexico City campus, for example, is one of the major private universities in the city. They also run a sizeble high school program.

Thank you Maesonna,

I knew they had campuses in Tampico and in Altamira, but I did not know they also had many other campuses throughout so many different cities of Mexico. I also took the following test to the Mexico one ("how well do you know South America") and scored 100% on that one, Maybe I should have kept driving! (smiling)

The UAM is a government university located in Mexico City, with several branches. Here's a little bit more information I found:

"The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) was founded in 1974 and is the third largest public university in Mexico. The UAM has four separate campuses located in different boroughs of Mexico City."

http://www.eulaks.eu/organisation/171.html

And from Wikipedia: The Metropolitan Autonomous University (Spanish language: Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana or UAM) is a public university located in Mexico City, Mexico. It has four separate campuses located in different boroughs of the Federal District:

* UAM Azcapotzalco, located in the Azcapotzalco area, Northern Mexico City
* UAM Iztapalapa, located in the Iztapalapa area, Eastern Mexico City
* UAM Cuajimalpa, located in Cuajimalpa area, Western Mexico City
* UAM Xochimilco, located in the Xochimilco area, Southern Mexico City.

The creation of a fifth campus in the municipality of Lerma, State of Mexico, has been approved, and it is under construction (as of Jan 2011).

UAM Rectoría is the main office, and it is located in the south of the city, near Xochimilco, at the street Canal de Miramontes.

We all know that some of us don't test well but I think it would be fun and very educational to have a quiz section! Personally, I don't care as much about my "score" as much as having the opportunity to learn from the experience. If I get a question wrong, then I am driven to find out why.

Remember back in the so-called "good old days" when they had paper place mats in restaurants where you had to correctly label all of the States in the US? Fun and I used to do well but now when one has to do the same with countries around the world, how well do you do with all of the country name changes?

I know I would learn from periodic quizzes!
