Car sticker question

Can't Post | Private Reply
The windshield on our car has broken, and we wil be getting it replaced tomorrow. The insurance adjustor told me that the glass shop will take the temporary import sticker off the old windshield and put it on the new.
Has anyone done this before, and with any kind of success? If not, I'd welcome other suggestions as to how to deal with this situation.

If they make the swap, fine. But to be on the safe side take pictures of the broken windshield before they try to remove it.
Include a closeup of the sticker. I would take pictures of the workers removing and replacing the sticker.
In other words. mucho documentation of the whole affair.

I've had seven or eight temp stickers removed and not a single one ever came off cleanly. I mean they came off in pieces. The glue they use could hold an airplane together. I lied, the last one came off pretty well because I had learned my lesson and had a new windshield so I coated the back with vaseline except for a 1/8" strip at the top and bottom. I still had to scrape residue from the strips with a razor blade. I think maybe they are designed to self destruct upon removal. But perhaps if they heat the glass and work it carefully they can do it.

That has been our experience too! Not sure about other border crossings but the one we typically use has a reader or scanner mounted in the shack. The sticker is read from there prior to being removed. On one occasion, I peeled the sticker in order to hand it to them and was chewed out for doing so. After a bunch of re-sticking they were finally able to read it. YMMV

I figured they might be like some other official stickers, and would not come off cleanly at all. I willl do as Rolly said and take photos.

Rather than trying to remove the thing, you might be better off to cut the glass around the decal after you take the pictures of the broken windshield. Then you could place the salvaged piece of glass with the decal still in place on your dashboard so it is visible from the outside. Carry the pictures with you in the car.

Sooner or later you are going to have to go to the border and get a new one.

Rolly's suggestion on the surface may be an ideal solution. However, given the construction of windshields and the use of tempered glass, it will take a very specialized tool to accomplish this task with any certainty and accuracy. If you can find someone who claims they can do this, I would submit that they not try to cut a small area but rather leave space for error.

I have the same issue as you. I was given this advice on rv.net.

If you use an experienced glass man, he will be able (with a little help from a hair dryer on the opposite side) to peel that sticker right off and put it on the new windshield. I've had to move mine twice already because of broken windshields.

Otherwise, you might want to call Mexico City and talk to them personally about this problem. The POC I have is

Lic. Ricardo Jesús Rojano Perez
Administración de Información
Administración Central de Planeación Aduanera
Av. Hidalgo No. 77, Módulo IV, 1er. Piso
Col. Guerrero, C.P. 06300 México, D..F.
Tel. 01 (55) 58-02-12-93

This is the desk for cancelling TIP's, which you'll probably have to do to get a new one. But even if there is another way, they probably can point you to the one you want to talk to. They speak english, by the way.

I am going to call them this week and see what they recommend.

Since I live in an area with lots of foreign plated cars, and ourinsurance is with Qualitas through Lewis & Lewis, a very popular choice for insurance, I have some confidence that the adjuster knows it can be done.
We'll see.

i just had my sticker removed.. better yet.. i removed it in front of the official... after removing it... the electronic part of the sticker was left on the windshield... he asked me for that part because they needed it..

so i would say... the windshield guys should have a heat gun... make sure they heat it up so that the whole sticker comes off... if you noticed not all of the sticker came off... make sure you take that part of.. you might needed when crossing the border..

The guy knew to remove the sticker and put it on the new wiindsheild. It is not stuck as well as it was before, but my husband glued it back in place. We'll have to keep an eye on it during the hot, humid summer.
