dog tips

I'm bringing my miniature poodle when I come down to Ajijic on Wednesday. I know to bring the vet's certificate and the regulations for bringing her to Mexico. What I don't know is how owning a dog is different in Mexico than NOB. How is day to day life different? Are there any cultural differences I should know about while walking my dog?

In addition to the certificate make sure you have something that says animal is pest free
inside and outside or something like that. Also the cert. is only good for a period of time FYI.
Both of these items get people.

As far as dog behavior the dogs down here act differently than up north. If you are walking
your dog and it is on a leash the loose dogs will ignore your dog for the most part. If your
dog walks around free it could have to deal with the local dogs. For the most part the animals
fight much less than the animals up north but I am sure it happens. I don't have the fear down
here with dogs that I have up north when walking around with dog or without. I enjoy the dogs
down here very much. Some of the loose dogs in La Floresta go from house to house where the
dog is behind the gate and tease each dog. It is quite a sight to watch these two dingo like
dogs irritate the whole neighborhood. They seem to be having quite a good time. I have also
seen this happen many times so it is part of there behavior. Well that is what I notice.

There's a nutcase operating in the Lakeside communities at present who is spiking hot dogs and chicken bits with rat poison. He/she is even tossing them over the fences into peoples' yards. Thes is causing much sorrow and anger, but as yet the person hasn't been caught. I would therefore suggest that you bring along the type of muzzle to fit your little poodle that will not allow it to eat anything that might be laying around, even in your own yard.
He/she is targeting pets and street dogs as well. The poison used is Warfarin (sp?) which causes the dog to hemorrage internally and die miserably.

Other than that, which we all hope is temporary situation, this is a happy place for a pooch. There is a long malecon along the lake for walks and a grassy park, too.
