Mexican Departure Tax

I arrived in Mexico by land last month. I did not pay any fee's yet at the bank.

I bought a one-way ticket to the USA. Is the exit tax included in the one-way ticket like it is for round trip tickets from the USA? I don't want to pay the tax twice.

There is no exit tax, but you do need to go to a bank to pay your FMM fee before you go to the sirport.

Please correct me if I am wrong but it has always been my understanding that if one doesn't pay their FMM fee within the allowed time (7 or 10 days?) - then they are in the country illegally.

Not to argue with you Rolly, but there is an exit tax in Mexico. There has been one since the eighties. I ran out of money in Cancun back then and didn't have any cash to pay the tax and board the plane. There were quite a few of us adolescence drunks. Immigration was not happy. Later on I remember requiring it to be included in the airfare. That way they got their money.

Here is a copy of the breakdown of my ticket.

Base Fare (x1): $149.00 Mexico IVA Transportation Tax: $4.10 Federal Tax: $0.00 Other Fees: $0.00 Passenger Facility Tax: $0.00 Security Fee: $0.00 Segment Fee: $0.00 Travel Insurance Fee: $0.00 International Taxes & Fees: $54.64 U.S. APIS User Fee: $5.00 U.S. Immigration Fee: $7.00 Mexico Airport Departure Tax: $26.34 U.S. Int'l Arr/Dep Tax: $16.30 Fare : $207.74 *Special Service Requests : $0.00 Grand Total: $207.74

Neil, In the past I have been in country for months before I got around to paying the FMM (FMT) tax at a bank. I think you just had to pay the tax before leaving the country. That is the reason I alway thought it was an exit tax.

I will just go pay it anyway even if it ends up paying for the same thing twice. I don't want any hassles when I need to get on a plane.

I well remember always needing to save enough Pesos to pay the departure tax at an airport in the 1980's. I don't remember if we were required to pay it in Pesos, but it was probably simpler than trying to pay it in US Dlls. It was never included in the airfare.

I have only flown out of Mexico twice in the past 2 decades, I bought my tickets in Mexico. I don't recall needing to pay a separate exit tax. I don't know if it is now included in a ticket price, or if maybe it isn't being collected anymore.

I think if you look at the tax breakdown included in your ticket price, you are seeing the fee (tax) tacked on by the airports and not a true departure tax for existing Mexico. Many of these fees used to be hidden in the ticket price but have become separate charges to increase the bottom line of the airlines. In other words, they used to absorb the fees but now tack them on.

That is correct. Today there is no national departure tax; it was discontinued several years ago.
But some airport charge a fee that is included in the ticket price.
This has nothing to do with the FMM fee.
