FM2 Lucrativa + Foreign plated vehicle

My FM3 is coming up for its third renewal and I see no reason to keep it. At this point, my intention is to become a permanent resident, or possibly a citizen, when the time comes so there's no reason to waste two more years on an FM3 to only then start the five years necessary via the FM2 path to inmigrado/citizen. I might also be converting to an FM2 Lucrativa because I may be starting a business in the coming year. No problems yet, except...

....there's that foreign-plated car I temporarily imported a few years back.

As I understand it from reading Rolly's ever-helpful site, an FM2 Rentista can continue to keep their foreign-plated vehicle up until the time they seek inmigrado/citizenship, but an FM2 Lucrativa cannot.

If that's the case, my guess is there are a fairly large number of FM2 Lucrativa holders who didn't export back their foreign-plated vehicles and continue to drive them here in Mexico. Does anyone want to share their experiences with this? (PM is fine.) Have you ever been questioned about the vehicle by Transito or other law enforcement? Alternatively, does anyone know what the consequences of being in violation are?

I can drag the car back to the US and sell it for twelve dollars if necessary. But at this point, it's kind of handy as a second car (we also now have a Mexican plated vehicle).

Will be seeing a lawyer on Friday about these and other issues, but I'll be surprised if she's knowledgable about this level of minutia.

In May my FM3 lucrativa will be coming up for its third renewal. Like tashby, I intend to become a permanent resident, so changing to an FM2 this year would speed the process along. But is this possible for just anyone, or does tashby have friends in high places, or at least at Migración, who can help her make the change? I understood that you have to have 5 years on an FM3 before changing to the FM2.

I switched to FM2 after two years on FM3, when my second renewal was due. Before applying, I did check with the local INM folks to make sure it was allowed. That was in 2008. I'm a "rentista" and own my home, but I have absolutely no friends in high places and did the entire FM2 procedure myself. I've read that some INM offices are still requiring 5 years on FM3, but I don't know that first hand.

I had/have a Mexican-plated car, so that was a non-issue.

They take your car, and you get to walk home.
If your car is worthless, then what do you have to lose considering the small chance of getting caught.

You can change to FM2 at any time.

When I visit INM in Mexico City in May, if they tell me I´m not yet eligible for an FM2, I´ll tell them that Rolly said I was : ) .

*scratches head*

Assuming you mean I get to walk home to my home in México, that's a beautiful thing.

The (fabulous) car is 17-years-old and still running like a champ. Don't have a strong need for it at this point, but driving it to the U.S. to sell it (for nothing) is going to be hard to justify If that's the only risk involved.

I want to be a good boy and stay in compliance, but in the long run, if what you describe is accurate it's actually easier (for me) if the car ultimately got confiscated.
