And with the very recent, almost precipitous drop in value of the U.S. dollar vs. the Mexican peso, that makes regular gasoline (Magna) the most expensive in USD per U.S. gallon ($2.95 per gallon) that I have ever seen in the 13 years I have lived full-time in México. Bad for those dependent on USD income to live in or play in México.

Hi Mazbook1,

I hope this makes you feel a little better. I am in McAllen, TX right now and the rice per gallon is at 3.47 a gallon. and expected to hit $4.50 to $5.00 per gallon by Labor Day. so maybe . . . . . just maybe your USD income would be much worse to live on NOB. I know it isn't much solace, but I guess there isn't much we can do about it. Being in the middle of remodeling my home in San Juan del Rio area, I can hardly wait to see what the price of premixed concrete or bagged cement for that matter is going to be. I think we are all fast heading to the second drop of the shoe as was predicted several months ago. I am just very thankful that my house and car are paid off and that I have no other bills except the monthly utilities and food bills. Sometimes life sucks, IMHO!

Most of us retired in Mexico use so little petrol that the expense is immaterial. I remember having a business lunch in France about 30 years ago. We were a group of 4 that all worked for the same huge US hi-tech company, we were Americans and French. The conversation wandered through many topics during the course of our long lunch. As we concluded our meal one of the French remarked that he was amazed that Americans wasted important social time discussing topics such as; the price of petrol, taxes, and the weather, all things beyond our control. Americans fixation with the price of gasoline has amazed me ever since. It matters so little.

David:

It matters very little when one is retired and essentially parked in one place. On the other hand, if one makes their living by traveling down the highway, increased gas prices can certainly damage the bottom line. Besides, it is often only natural for certain Gringos to have something to bit*h about! Those of you who live in Mexico have it easy since speculation often doesn't play a part in your gas prices. Remember, there are those who weigh the packaging at Super Lake to make sure they are not getting scre*ed!

Since you talk about the drop in the dollar vs peso, people that have a fideicomiso are getting hosed. I called my bank 6 months ago and explained that each time i get my bill for my fide. it is based on the inflation rate. But the bill is compounded meaning that the bill last year plus last years increase in now being calculated to figure out this years bill.
They said yes but the exchange rate keeps going up so you keep getting more pesos when you pay your bill. or exchange money.

I said can you contact the main bank and maybe I can re negotiate a new payment for the Fede?
They said they would check. And when I called back they said no can do.
I told them that if inflation kicks in or if the conversion drops that is a lot of money for just holding papers. And I said when the payments get real high then a 1% or 3% increase becomes expensive.
Did not matter to them.
When I get down to Mexico I am going to look into changing Banks that hold the Fedi.
Maybe I can find one that will do it for a flat fee, or one that will cap it.

I know this is not what the thread is about but since you are talking about conversion rates I figured I would throw it in.

Back in 2003 the exchange rate was about 10 pesos to the dollar.

It changes.

I have been there at 10.00 and at a bit over 13

It is something we watch as prepare to move to Merida

It does change, but for the last couple of years it's been around 12 pesos to the dollar. If memory serves, for a brief period around three years ago, it was 15 to the dollar!
