You see, everything isn't about the relatively small group of retirees from the USA...

Whaaaa? You're kidding, right?

On a side note, I've seen those guys sitting just outside the airport working their territory. There was a while there when I was making fairly frequent trips to the airport, and was just waiting for my number get called. Not yet, so far.

And I'm sure I've just guaranteed it'll happen next time....

And by the way, why is this thread limited to only mordida as it applies to traffic situations? Oh that's right. Because it really is only about a small group of retirees from the US who don't do anything but.....bla bla bla.

This may surprise you but not everyone who is dark skinned is poor, another misconception about people in Mexico.

I have more than a few friends who are dark skinned down in Chiapas some are indigenous some are mestizos some are well educated some are not and I also know quite a few indigenous that have money and are educated, some others have businesses and travel with money. Most of the people travelling in cars are not dirt poor.
By the way the gangs around Tapachula make huge amount of money robbing and kidnapping Central Americans who are dark skinned and poor so go and figure.

I remember a friend from Tuxtla who is dark making a big joke on how many time he was stopped and checked on his way to Guadalajara, I hear the same thing from my Zapotec friends from Oaxaca and some of the Chamula merchants from Chiapas.
I do not think the cops are racists at all but they know which people to target, nothing else.

In your case you were lucky and you deserved a big fine, nothing to do with mordida. So it turns out that you have never paid mordida although you offered it! Tell me who is crooked around here?
Six years in Mexico and no Spanish ? What a shame!

So, let me make sure I understand what you're saying: Actually 99% of the cars are here illegally by MEXICAN citizens??????? Surely not, you must be mistaken, even you and I agree that all problems here are gringo related and the "small" group of foreign interlopers are always the ones who are the problem - but now you tell me it's actually Mexican citizens breaking the law - well, that's a complete epiphany to me, by this revelation one might even extrapolate that Mexican "citizens" might even break the law of a foreign country (like NOB man) and sneak in?????? Again, surely not, but I'd still like to see the 99% figure documented.

Oh, PS: surely that "chocolate" comment must smack of racism in some context?

Thanks again, Steve. Love Bennie. Suggested that he start his own thread. He chose not to do so but continue on with my thread. I, as you, do not believe what he has said, unless he can provide us with proof. C'mon Bennie, show us what you are working with. T

Perfect Bennie, Manual and all your other ID's, that's exactly the phrase that I was waiting to hear, "Only in the mind of a moron" - which completely, explicitly and totally defines all the ones who cry "racist" at every turn that doesn't fit their template.

You fell exactly into the realm of a rational, normal analytical response (which surprised me I must admit) but never the less, your response epitomizes the rampant stupidity of all those who use that reference when talking about Mexicans and Americans, we are all the same "race" including you who are of the American ethnicity but Mexican loyalty.

All this posturing, all the testorone and all the bravado is basically "crap" and until we accept our common goals and commonalities we are doomed to a very very dismal future.

There are tens of thousands of gringos living in Mexico that love the country, it's people, culture and give endlessly to charities which I might add is something the elite in Mexico do not commonly do. They want to see the country prosper and again become the example it was and can be. But without some acceptance of assistance, Mexico will degenerate into a truly third world country with little future.

There's enough testosterone on this thread to fuel a little league soccer match, but no matter.
They will survive each other......I think.

My contribution here is that I was told on decent authority that the term "chocolates" in reference to autombiles of dubious descent referred not to racism of any kind, but to the notion that, like in a box of actual chocolates.........you don't really know what you're getting. You know, like one gringo selling to another, or to a Mexican without "nationalizing" the car.

Some time back, I read an article online at EL INFORMADOR that pegged the figure at 60% chocolates. Not splitting hairs here as no matter whose figure you use, it has to be rather high!

Usually when someone says "99%" it is a figure of speech for some undetermined high probability. If you get out of tourist or ex-pat areas and walk around, you will likely see lots of cars with U.S. plates or expired U.S. registration stickers with no gringo or car permit in sight. My BIL has one, he "bought it from another guy" and that's as far as most people care to wonder.

So, to let the thread wander a tad further:

The big problem with those "chocolates" is that the original owner is held responsible for damage done in the car down the line. i.e.: John Jones, expat, sells his car to Carlos Martinez, the Mexican citizen or to Jack Smith, another expat. One of them sells it again and the idiot who bought it gets drunk and plows into a family of eight jammed into another car, with gruesome results. No matter what:.......it's a "chocolate" and the problem applies. John Jones gets nailed.

Rolly can probably expand on this subject.

That's why we didn't sell our beautiful long cab pickup to any of the people who wanted to just buy it, hand us a fistful of pesos and no further ado.

Getting back to the subject of Mordida, it's remarkable how few Mexican traffic cops have been greedily following our new Jalisco plated car. Nice.
