Where can I find a high-quality dark (almost black) molcajete? I should have bought one while I was staying in Mexico, but that is water under the bridge now.

Go to a grocery store in the Mexican-American part of your town---or a larger town nearby. You can usually find one there, or at least a lead.

Cathy - I got mine about four years ago at one of the dozen or so latino markets here in Durham, NC. I did get a recommendation on which store from a Mexican friend before I bought, but it was exactly like the ones I saw in Gto. Mexico when I was there two years ago. I have a problem buying something like this on line. I don't know what the "catalogue" type outfits have on line, but at this store there were about ten molcajetes out and they all had a slightly different heft and "feel". I picked up and handles three or four before I bought. Good Luck!
