Good news for tourism in Mazatlan. An article in this morning's newspaper states that the hotels are very near 100% occupancy for Carnaval 2011. This is great news for the city. These pictures depict appreciation for our current tourists arriving by cruise ship.

The post states that hotels are at nearly 100% occupancy, and that is the case. I did some checking just yesterday, as a matter of fact, and indeed the reservations have been pouring in for Carnaval and Semana Santa, as well. People, especially from around the State of Sinaloa, are coming to Carnaval. Reality is, that as much as certain people (and questionable blogs) like to spread gloom and doom, life does go on here. The preparation for Carnaval, which begins today, has been fun and people are looking forward to (especially the kids who get time off from school).

Yesterday, a happy story occurred after the Oosterdam docked. An American woman (first off the cruise ship for obvious reasons), was taken to the hospital where she promptly gave birth to a little boy! The little fellow will automatically have Mexican citizenship, and his parents will have nice memories of Mazatlan.

I noticed that there were four pictures, two showing crowds at the carnival, and two showing police officers with their faces obscured, presumably for security. I would not expect that routine work at a public event is regarded as a security risk requiring that their faces be obscured.

Pretty dangerous to be a police officer in Mexico these days. Just for comparison, in the entire United states, for the year to date, 18 police officers have been shot and killed.

Here are some more pictures...these of yesterday's parade. Carnival has turned out to be a huge success this year, with more attendees than last year. Yes, you will notice any special police agent's identity to be masked in photo's or them to be wearing balaclavas to protect their identities. Living here, it seems common sense, and we are used to it.
