Question for expats who lived here at the time of 9-11

I have heard unverified rumors that after the 9-11 destruction of the World Trade Center Towers, that within a couple of days the Mexican government sent the army into Lakeside to protect us expats. Any body here then, that can verify this or just another of the ten thousand rumors?. Thanks. T.

For purposes of clarification, I want to hear only from expats that lived here on September 11, 2001 and want first hand information from them as to what , if anything, the response of the Mexican goverment was at that time. T.

I lived here then, in Jocotopec. And there is no truth to what you have learned. There was no Mexican government presence at all other than the usual local police no change from the norm. But Mexicans were very sympathetic with what happened.

We were here then too, just moved into our brand new house. No truth to what you have heard or learned by the rumor mill.

Why would you think the Mexican Gov't would try to protect expats when there is no terror threat here? Mexico doesn't get involved in the politics of the world like the US does.

Demonio - The US's drug war!!! Don't think so. How do you figure that?

The Cartels are shipping drugs FROM and thru Mexico to the US. The Cartels are fighting IN Mexico with Mexicans.

The only involvement by the US and Canada is that the druggies are in the US and Canada. IMO, druggies cannot be rehabilitated.

Was it the chicken or the egg which came first re the drug wars? Yes, the customers are NOB for the most part and yes, the "war" part is going on in Mexico, with Mexicans doing most of the dying. So........ would it change anything if all drugs were legalized NOB and all druggies could go to hell in their own way?

I suspect that another main source of income would be next for the cartels. An expansion of kidnapping/extortion? As for rehabilitation, I've never actually met anyone who was rehabilitated from one drug without taking up another form of reality denial. Sometimes becoming fanatical re politics or religion will do the job.

Going back to the OP, however.........I just have to wonder where "T"heard such a baseless rumor in the first place? What a stretch!

Just about every post on this and other forums wanders from the original intent as I see it. Gringal certainly didn't start this particular 'wander'. And it seems to me that, while El Jefe can and did ask that the posts be directed towards the original subject, none of the rest of us can dictate who may or may not post on or off topic!?!

Agree with you 100%. The best we can do as OP's on a thread when we see it going way off topic is to try to redirect it to the topic. I have seen threads started by folks and have gone on for over 30 responses without a single response to the OP. Too weird. Just glad we have Rolly here as a moderator. Thanks, Rolly. You know why. True. The OP should not try to dictate who may respond or what the responses should be.
It is desirable that threads not get hijacked, although sometimes a hijacking leads to a more interesting discussion.
In such cases, the hijack may be broken off to become a new thread.

Even now, this thread has been hijacked. But the original question seems to have run its course anyway.

The "original question" in this case was based on an admittedly unsubstantiated rumor from who knows where or when.
It might be interesting to hear where "T" heard it in the first place, and why he took it seriously enough to bring it up here.

I think the place it wandered off to might make for an interesting further discussion, even though we've been there numerous times already.........the drug issue, and can druggies really be rehabilitated? Maybe someone has a new insight into this very serious matter.

I didn't llive here- But, Mexico has a large World Trade Center in Guadalajara- twin towers also- that is part of the world wide organization-several Consulates and American corps have offices there - if they were going to send troops, maaybe tbe Guad WTC or the WTC in Mexico City- but Ajijic??? dream on

I truly wish I could remember, Was told to me many months, or maybe years ago by two separate folks that did not know each other. I gave it no further thought until the events of the last two weeks here and then I was hoping that it was the truth. T.

I lived in Ajijic on September 11, 2001. No troops were sent in to protect expatriates or anyone else. Pure rumor.

Regardless of when you heard it, why bring it up here? Old rumors of 10 years ago have no place here. We have enough rumors of today. If anything such as you suggested actually happened you have found it on Google.

On 9-11-2001, we were renting a casita in Chula Vista, above the golf course. My landlord, who lived next door, passed along a letter from local law enforcement indicating that they would be patrolling our area. Over the next few days we saw them several times which was very unusual. They were police not the army.

That is also what I remember. The day it happened the Governor sent state police here to augment the local force. Within a few days that stopped.

It was also reported in the Guadalajara Reporter.

But I agree with others...why bring up such an old subject.

T seems to have a lot of posts that sound my like causing trouble than anything else.
