Flat tejas on a roof

I have a flat roof that needs a bit of a slope for drainage. My maestro wants to make the cement slope and use the flat tejas on top with a cement wash over them. Says they act as a shield by absorbing water and last much longer than sealer.

Is this an old Mexican wives tale or some value there? You'd think a smooth finish with impermeabilizante would be good but the sealer doesn't last long and this roof will have traffic

My flat roof house has an additional bedroom with tejas on the roof over the carport(cochera) that I added for years ago. I applied sealer(three year warranty) to the other part of the roof(sin tejas) at the same time as the addition was done. Last winter there were small leaks in the sealed roof and none in the addition. I would vote for tejas. I also plan on resealing both surfaces this spring with a sealer with a longer warranty.

The flat tiles are called tecatas and they along with a pure cement coat are a traditional way to seal roofs.
