Copper Canyon Train tickets

Can't Post | Private Reply
Greetings,

I will be in Chihuahua next week and was wondering if it would be difficult to buy an econo ticket on El Chepe. I know you can't buy econo class in advance. Anyone know if the trains are full this time of year? Just don't want to drive all that way and not get a ticket!

Cheers,

Cathi

Apart from buying the tickets (I don't have an answer); do you plan any stopovers between Chihuahua and Los Mochis?

If you don't get an answer here, there are several people on the Lonelyplanet.com/thorntree Mexico Forum who might know.

I assume that you have seen this:

Based on the link, the ticket prices are very high. I recall riding the from Los M. to Creel for something like 15 dollars (multiple trips over several years) between mid Dec and Feb.

The prices are in PESOS. I though it looked very inexpensive.

15 dollars is about 130 pesos. (I rode it a few years ago).

I also rode it with a few locals from creel, got the feeling that 130 pesos was a lot to spend for them to return home from visiting relatives. They must have spent most of what they had in Los M.

If you are talking US Dollars, 15 dollars is 183 pesos (at 12.2), or 130 pesos is about $10.80 dollars.

Even at $1090MXP for a 15+ hour and unknown number of mile train ride and the unique experience of seeing such a canyon, I cannot see where the price is a big deal. Maybe it was $15USD at some point in the past but remember this is one of the few passenger trains still operating in MX. Maybe they want the operation to pay for itself instead of being subsidized?
