I rent a PO Box (in Spanish Apartado Postal) here in Mexico City at my local branch of Correos Mexicanos. I imagine you could do the same in Oaxaca.

How about getting it delivered at you place? In Chiapas the post office delivers our mail to our door. We live in the center and have no problem with mail delivery. See where you will live and then figure it from there you may have no problems. If they do not deliver get a, APDO.

I asked because I've heard that many people have delivery services in Texas... mail boxes where they have checks and packages delivered, then trucked over the border...
isn't this so?

No need for that extra expense. Just have your mail sent to wherever you´ll be living in Mexico.

If you have something sensitive have it sent certified mail which means you will have to sign for it when you get it or DHL, Fedex or UPS.
We found out that whatever we sent certified mail from here arrives without any problems.
If you are in the Ajijic area you have a lot of options you do not have in some other parts in Mexico and we have found out living in Chiapas that you do not really need all the other more expensive options.
We have an PO box in Ajijic and will cancel it as we do not get any mail any longer, we are getting most of what we need on line, communicate via Internet and mostly get junk mail in the postal box from the post office. If we have occasional mail sent to us the post office will deliver it .

I am moving to Cozumel. I am getting a mail box in the U.S. If figure I would not want my banks etc sending to Mexico 1099 forms regular mail and I don't think they will send cert.
Is there another way I can get away without a mail box in the U.S. other then family sending it? I really don't see how.

My US bank and brokerage firm both send me emails stating that documents are available in PDF format for me to download. When Migration asked for proof of income, they accepted the PDF formatted statements printed on my printer.

Me too. I have not seen a printed bank statement since I moved here 11 years ago.
The PDFs work just fine with INM.

How about your 1099 forms I believe by law they have to send them by mail so without a box they would go by regular mail to Mexico. If I can do without a box I would but the 1099 thing is a problem.
At least if they go to the box I can either have it destroyed and use the pdf file or have it sent by fedex or UPS.

You don't need the physical 1099s. You just need the information on them. I never see the 1099s; I gather the information from online sources. It's worked for me for 11 years. I use TurboTax to file online. I assume you are using an online service?

Hi Rolly
I realize that you do not need the physical 1099 but the banks and brokerage houses send them out I think by law. So if you do not have a mail box they are sent to Mexico. How do you get the banks and brokerage houses from sending them out, or can you?
The 1099 have your social security number don't they? And if it fell in the wrong hands that would not be good.

I don't think you can make them stop. I only have two, and they go to my sister who tosses them.
Because I already know what they will say, I file my tax form before the 1099s even go out.
In fact, this year, as usual, I had my refund before the 1099s were mailed.

Over the last 14 years, we've had many documents that included name and social security number sent to our Mexico address, and delivered by the Mexican postal service. These include 1099s, correspondence from social security (including the yearly confirmation of foreign address), correspondence regarding mutual funds, etc.
I'm more concerned about the amount of time that it takes foreign mail to arrive at our home (3-4 weeks), than the security issues. That's not to say that mail will never be tampered with, but so far it has not been a problem for us.

I have read of specialty mail services who will scan and then email all of your important mail and then certify that said mail is shredded after processing. The one that I looked at some time back carried a heavy liability policy and was bonded to provide their customers with the peace of mind that everything was done "according to Hoyle". If my memory serves me correctly, the one I viewed was based in South Dakota. A GOOGLE search for "postal mail scanning service" provides quite a bit of info.

When Social Security sends you information such as your verification that your are still living in Mexico, it will have your SSAN printed on the letter. (If you don't tell them you are living in Mexico, they won't send the request.) Medicare enrollment letters contain your SSAN. If you request an Award Letter from SS (for proof on income), it will have your SSAN on it.

Email is not secure you are better off sending it through an email in a compressed file password protected or in a pdf file password protected anyone sending emails with ss numbers or other vital private info are nuts, no offense in case anyone here is.

The one service that I did look at placed the scanned copies in your own secure electronic mailbox. You could then access and download from there.
