Credit card security with long-distance buses

We are planning a long-distance bus trip in Mexico. We are uncertain whether to use a credit card with a local travel agency to buy tickets in advance, or to buy the tickets with cash on the day we travel. How secure are credit cards when used with a travel agent or bus company? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Use cash for every thing you can. Use your ATM card to get cash as you need it.
Save your credit card for emergencies and, maybe, hotels.

I always buy my ticket via the internet from ticketbus.com or from the bus company directly with my debit card, never had a problem. Of course this does not mean problems cannot happen.
The bus companies are pretty flexible when it comes to changes and cancellations. I had to cancel a ticket from Puebla one day as my travelling companion got sick and we had to fly back . The bus company returned my money without any questions.
