Legal possession de mota, etc.

The last I read was that the legal possession of less than 5 grams of mota, (and the other stuff), was OK. What about actually getting it or growing it, though? There are those of us who have legitimate conditions which qualify us for medical use of mota in the US, but would understandably be hesitant to try and get the legal amount off to the side street of some plaza or mercado, no? Is there an area where this is generally tolerated, others where the policia shake you down for a mordita to leave you in peace? Gracias por la ayuda. (Bad Espanyol I know! Que' lastima!)

I was a regular pot smoker for many years until I quit a few years ago for health reasons.
I would not be a smoker today because of the danger in dealing with the people who supply it.
All my pot-head friends have stopped smoking for the same reason.
It's not the law that frightens them, it's the lawless drug gangs that control the market.
I'm not suggesting the the gangs have a pogrom against their customers;
but when the bullets fly, everyone around is in danger.
Proceed at your own peril. If you must, start by asking taxi drivers.

You can't walk down the street in a tourist town without getting hit up to buy drugs every ten minutes.

Reefhound, Now that is a terrible bit of misinformation ("You can't walk down the street in a tourist town without getting hit up to buy drugs every ten minutes. "), as it just isn't true.

I started coming to Mazatlán as a tourist in 1993 and moved here permanently in 1998 and have NEVER been asked by anyone on the street if I wanted mota or any other drug. The only ones that have always AND still annoy me on the street are the time-share salesmen!

While I was just a tourist and living in a small hotel in an area supposedly rampant with drug peddlers, never one single time has this happened to me. As usual, you're peddling total BS!

You could be right, maybe it's every 15 minutes.

Perhaps it's profiling in your case, Reefhound? I can count on one hand (and still have a finger or two left over) the times in the ten years or so I've been in Mexico that I've been solicited to purchase non-traditional agricultural produce. And, at least one time was in jest.

Could be. I'm younger than most here. Never happens in places like Celaya, Queretaro, SLP, other interior towns. Only tourist towns I see are in Cozumel and Yucatan when I'm with a group of guys. Maybe it's a Yucatan thing. I wasn't trying to insult or annoy anyone, just mentioning my experience in case the OP is near a tourist town.

Gracias a' todo for your observations; good information that provides a wider picture, certainly. Mostly, I was hoping to hear from someone who lives there and uses it for legitimate health concerns, such as chronic pain, etcetera. Of course, the paranoid in me would say, "Hey, the taxi driver probably gets a taste of the mordita from his buddy policia hombre who's alerted to your purchase and then says, "Esta es mas de cinco grammes", (sorry, really don't speak Spanish, obviously).
I have know of a relative's relative who lives outside of PV who grows her own and reports no hassles. Understandably, this is a complex picture depending on individual experience.

When I was in my 30s and visiting PV, Acapulco, Etc, people would offer to sell us/me pot. We had been warned not to buy any from these guys because it could be a trap where you would be forced to pay a cop a large bribe.

Luckily at that time in my life, I was more interested in cheap tequila than pot.

If I remember correctly, I read in the Guad Reporter that under the new law, even if you have a very small quantity of pot, although it's still against the law. But there is no penalty, or something like. Sadly I can not be more helpful as I don't know anyone who smokes the stuff

However, I've discovered a new wonder drug that really works great :). It helps me with my arthritus, memory, etc and it's discounted, at least is was yesterday. Oh yes, I dilute it with a diet Coke. You guessed it, I'm talking about Bacardi Rum.

A 1.75 liter bottle which normally goes for $215 to $220 pesos lakeside, went for yesterday for $175 pesos at costco - $43.88 (cupon de desquento) or $131.12 pesos plus 16 % IVA or $152.10 pesos.

At 12.5 to 1 that's less than $13 dollars per 1.75 liter bottle. I think it's something like $30 US in Seattle.

My wife and I were in Playa del Carmen last month for a couple of days. I told my wife that she must be a "real stick in the mud". I had gone out for a stroll on 5th Ave. in the early evening by myself. I was offered the opportunity to get high and/or hook-up wth some chicas. Since I declined both then I must want to hook-up with some chicos. That made me laugh. I was never offered any such fun when strolling with my wife. Here in Merida, I've been offered drugs at least 50 times in the 7 years we have lived here. Either drugs or do I want to be a sugar daddy to one of the many male prostitutes. Again I have graciously declined but have had some nice conversations when they found out I was not interested.

There are too many of them to be undercover cops. Maybe one or two now and then... They know their game and they know how to profile their targets although, like you, my response has always been not interested.
