Corruption trials fall apart in Michoacan

The Los Angeles Times reports:
When 35 mayors, prosecutors, police chiefs and other officials in the state of Michoacan were hauled into jail and accused of taking bribes from a cartel last year, it looked as if the federal government was finally attacking the political collusion that has long nurtured the drug gangs.

But instead of heralding a bold new front in Mexican President Felipe Calderon's 4-year-old drug war, the case has turned out to be an embarrassing example of how that offensive is failing.

More than a year later, the prosecution is in ruins. Judges ruled that the evidence was too flimsy, and all but one of the suspects has been freed. Many have returned to their old jobs, accusing the government of a politically motivated witch hunt during an election season.

Or perhaps, it was, after all, a "politically motivated witch hunt during an election season."

The federal government botched it really bad. Many but not all of those arrested and released were in cahoots with the mafia.
On the other hand the government concentrated their efforts on the perredistas in the our state. We all know the panistas and priistas have their black sheep in high places but so far they havenīt been really bothered locally or on a national level.

Maybe so. But then that would mean they didn't even arrest any of the mayors, officials, and police that are actually corrupt. Or maybe you would contend that there is no such corruption?

Oh hell yeah, at least half were dirty. But somehow they got off. Itīs a dirty game this so-called drug war. Those at the top on both sides know what is really going on. How about those two ICE agents? What were they doing deep in Mexico driving a car cross country? Did they have US govt plates? If not, who ratted them out? Something smells fishy and it ainīt my week old tuna sandwich.
