Which if any airline is recommended for transporting a 25 lb Dog ?

Any idea on the cost.

I am planning a trip to the MidWest from GDL. The dog was born in the US.

I know USAirways will not transport him.

Thanks In Advance

I would think that you will have to start with those airlines that fly full sized jets as opposed to the smaller jets like US Air uses. Maybe Continental out of Houston, American out of Dallas, Delta out of Atlanta? Have no idea of their individual pet travel policies.

You'd best call the various airlines.

Continental will only transport a dog that size in baggage, which I do NOT recommend! You may need to consider driving to provide the best care for your best friend.

I have to agree 100% with Camille, I worked at SFO for 15 years and see how all airlines baggage handlers treated dogs and cats, it is disgraceful....I could tell you stories but I am afraid it would make you sick...

What is the difference when they treat the passengers in the cabin the way they do? Back in the good old days, we traveled all over the world with dogs (not in the cabin) and they were well treated back then.

At least when travelling in the cabin you AND your dog usually make it to your destination ... eventually

Dogs from Mexico travelling as cargo are not always so lucky.

Not sure if the dog travelling in the cabin has a choice between the new scanners or the more intimate pat downs..

When it down to an airline, I have narrowed things down to; Alaska and their partner Horizon. Does anyone know anything about these airlines or company ? I was told that at the time of ticketing (not on the internet) one must make the arrangements for the pet to insure that they have enough room. Additionally I was informed that the area on the plane is heated and pressurized.

Comments !

Some of the airlines are refusing to take snub or short nose dogs at any time now.

Also ran across airlines having temperature restrictions since some cargo areas get cold and others may be keeping ones pet outside or its put on the plane and the cargo doors are open for longer then 15 minutes with the pet near them during the loading process.

In looking at ALASKA, it appears that they fly 737-800's into Guadalajara. ALASKA used to be a good airline but haven't flown them in years, so cannot comment to their current level of service. I did find one comment on their site which may be of concern: "Live animals cannot be shipped as Animal Express to Mexico on Alaska Airlines"

Just checked, https://www.alaskaair.com/...ing-Live-Animals.asp relates to pets traveling alone.

I problem with Alaska Air could be having to take another airlines flights to ones final destination. If that is the case the other airline may refuse the pet and or charge an additional fee.

It's important to ensure that if there is a transfer to another plane or a stop somewhere that the chances of extreme weather, either hot or cold, is not a risk because with the possibility of delay's the dog can be waiting on a hot or cold tarmac in a crate with no-one checking for their well being. My understanding is this is the biggest risk.

"When it down to an airline, I have narrowed things down to; Alaska and their partner Horizon. Does anyone know anything about these airlines or company ?" I flew back and forth from Puerto Vallarta to Vancouver, Canada, with my Standard Poodle for six years running (at least one round trip per year). I raved about their cargo service to anyone who would listen. In the early days, they'd let me get off the plane and even take him for walks at SFO and LAX, provided I had him back in plenty of time for take-off for the last leg of the flight. He thought flying was fun and exciting. (Even flew to Warsaw with me in 2004 with no repercussions ... on a different airline, of course).

The last flight from Vancouver to PV in January 2009 was the last flight he will ever be put on by me. Apparently, he was transferred at LAX without incident, though I'm not sure of that since they wouldn't let me check on him. But when I opened his battered crate at PVR, I found a dog who was shaking uncontrollably, scared sh*tless. He had never soiled his crate before (he's 11 years old). When I put him in the car, I noticed blood streaming from his ears and rushed him straight to my vet in Bucerias. The vet told me the cargo hold was not pressurized properly and his "ears had blown out". It's almost two years later and he still has hearing problems, and is terrified of approaching his crate, which was his little sanctuary for many years.

Needless to say, I have not flown my pooch since, with Alaska or any other airline. We live in Mexico year round, so the old fella will pass his last years here. He'll never fly anywhere again.

The reality is that no one gives a hoot any more. It's all about the bottom line and has nothing to do with customer service. Lucky folks who want to fly their pets domestically in the U.S. .... they have Pet Airways now, whose ONLY passengers are pets. Too bad they're too young to have gone international. Great airline!

The airline in GDL permitted the 25 dog to travel on the plane in a soft carrier. To say the least it was a complete shock, the dog traveled to Texas and then onward in a soft dog carrier. Although the dog weighs 25 lbs the pugle is not that large and does not have a snub snout. I think the airline permitted the dog since the soft carrier easly fit under the seat in the carrier. The question that remains is will the airline permit the dog to return to Mexico in the cabin.

Why not check with your local animal rescue organization. They send dogs to the US and will be able to advise you. You will need a current rabies vaccination certificate and a certificate from your local vet that your dog has been examined just before leaving .
We have taken our 2 cats many times on Alaska/ Horizon, but they fit under the seat , so travel in the cabin. We would be a little reluctant to send any animal in the cargo hold, although many folks do. Try www.sturdiproducts.com. These folk make pet carriers, good ones, in Wa. and have a link to airline pet policies.
