I ended up getting my CURP at a Registro Civil in my town, which only took about 10 minutes.
How fortunate. I had to wait in line at the Registro Civil about 45 minutes with all my documentation, visa, passport, etc., to be told that I needed IMN to issue something saying I ws OK to be given a CURP number before I could come back and wait in line again to be told the next thing I lack. When I did get to INM a month or so later to renew my visa it was about a one-and-a-half hour wait, the first of three trips that took even longer because of the new system. Then the guy at the counter argued that I didn't need that number. Eventually he relented, wrote something in my visa book that was taken back on my next trip. I gave up on trying to get the CURP so all my cell phones and everything else like that are registered in Tere's name instead of mine. The same Spanish word is used for "wait" and "hope" and there does not seem to be much of a distinction made between those two concepts.
